AG Rojas has created the first ever official music video for jazz legend John Coltrane’s spiritual masterpiece - one of the most important and influential jazz records ever made - by returning to the hallowed studio where it was recorded in 1964.Created in honour of the centenary of Coltrane's birth, Rojas's video for Acknowlegement, the opening and most iconic movement of the album-length suite A Love Supreme, was filmed at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. But rather than reconstruct the magical recording with musicians or actors, Rojas turns the space itself into the main character of the film. It becomes the foundation from which the viewer's imagination can run free as Coltrane's divine music plays. It's an audacious approach, but by focussing on the details, with superb black and white cinematography from Shawn Peters, Rojas's underlines the majesty and beauty of Coltane's recording by capturing the studio's unique character. [imgtoken data:1] “When I arrived at Van Gelder Studio for the first time on a May morning, there were no words, just a shared, awestruck look between my friend and collaborator Shawn Peters and me," explains Rojas."The studio is hidden down a long, tree-lined driveway, flanked now by two nondescript office buildings. You feel the space before you see it. But when you step into the studio, you are immediately welcomed into a world that honours nature as well as nature’s sacred geometry. Along with some recording gear, instruments, and ephemera that transport you through time."For the film, we attempted to imagine what that December night in 1964 may have felt like as John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones recorded A Love Supreme. Not exactly what it looked like (though a lot of the original recording equipment remains), but something more like the spiritual residue of their presence and sound. "I grew up playing saxophone in jazz bands, so the concepts of improvisation and collaboration are familiar to me (and crucial when it comes to filmmaking). That is how our cinematographer Shawn; our production designer Emmeline E. Wilks Dupoise; my producer Grace Campos and our crew approached the day. We listened to music, laughed, broke bread, and improvised with a 16mm camera all day and night in this very special place: together.”

Sam Spruell (Fargo, The Hurt Locker and The Gold) performs alongside actress Erza Sejdiu, bringing an expressive story to life through movement, in this cinematic collaboration between Dutch band Yīn Yīn and director Sharif Abd el Mawla. In the mysterious video for In Search Of Yang, Spruell falls to Earth, then maneouvres through the streets and buildings of Pristina in Kosova, eventually discovering his soulmate in the equally intense Sejdiu (the eponymous Yang) and finding release through dance. [imgtoken data:1]The film was shot by DoP Daan Bukman, whose camerawork grounds the story in texture and movement. The visual world was designed by Jose Tirado (The Beasts, Rosalía), with choreography by Mès Lesne (Morning Interlude, Core, Domons).Produced by Bonkers Unitied in partnership with new-land and serviced by Horizon-T in Kosovo, the video was shot on location in the streets of Pristina and inside the city's iconic Grand Hotel, where Sharif Abd el Mawla and his collaborators let rhythm, place, and performance converge in the search for Yang.

A grotesque tableau unfolds between two young women, a car and a rope - blurring the line between allegory and violence - in Casper Balslev's latest video for genre-bending Nordic trio 802.In contrast to Balslev-directed short films that accompanied the band's previous releases, 1986 Forever and the UK Music Video Award-nominated A Heavy Metal Bedtime Story, the visual for H.I.T.S. is a short sharp shock: an unsettling scenario of stark symbolism, delivered with a cinematic punch, in under two minutes. The video deepens the song’s core tension: the eternal clash between good and evil - tautly delivered by Balslev's direction, with gritty cinematography by Sebastian Wintherø. And in this story of one woman's determination to dispatch her rival in the most sadistic manner possible, there is an mindboggling final twist.

802-'H.i.t.s'-by-Casper-Balslev

Casper Balslev directs a superb origin story for Danish metal band 802, where it's 1986 Forever: a short film, that tells the tale of small town losers Andreas Asingh and Emil Sorensen's long journey to rock 'n roll glory.1986 Forever is a follow-up to Casper Balslev's marvellous A Heavy Metal Bedroom Story, released last year, featuring the band's debut single My Girl - a deadpan black comedy about to goth-obsessed girls who find each other. And it's a more ambitious proposition, as we are treated to a mythic story of the band's early struggles, back in 1986, packed with comedy, violence and a hallucinatory trip to Tenerife. The main thrust is Andreas and Emil's long search for the bass player of their dreams - achieved when they find Kasper Holbaek in Tenerife - followed by their eventual progress to the recording studio and a dangerous encounter with a psychopathic label boss.Balslev masterfully maneuvres the story with considerable skill and, bolstered by excellent performances across the board, and excellent period detail in both art direction and DoP Tobias Scavenius's 80s-esque cinematography. The official video for 802's track 1986, comprised of a cutdown section of this full-length short film, was released earlier this year. But this actually feels like it has the potential of being a full length movie, like Kneecap. A must-watch.[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

The director, now signed to new—land, on his recent video for Sasha Keable and 6lack, a family trip to Mecca, and how stumbling across a show on late night TV changed his life.
Abdi Ibrahim is Somali-American director and photographer, hailing from the North West USA, who has established his own unique visual language largely through working in the fashion world, shooting portraits and campaigns for editorials, with his work appearing in publications such as The New Yorker, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, and Esquire. He made an auspicious debut as a filmmaker, with a short documentary for Apple Music, and since then he has since gone on to collaborate with Lacoste, the NFL, Subaru, and more, in the brands space. His music video career took off in 2022 with his video for Vince Staples' MAGIC, featuring DJ Mustard - an example of how his work incorporates storytelling and visceral imagery with touches of magic realism. This year Abdi joined the new talent roster at new—land for representation in London, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Copenhagen and has made his first UK-commissioned video for Sasha Keable and 6lack. He now submits himself to a quick end-of-the-year grilling via the ever-popular SNAPSHOT Q&A... Name: Abdi IbrahimBirthday: July 13, 1996Where did you grow up? I grew up in Kent, Washington near Seattle Where do you live now? I currently live in Los AngelesWhat were the important first projects for you, in terms of a learning experience and getting noticed? The Vince Staples music video for Magic featuring DJ Mustard, and a Lacoste commercial with Venus Williams. More so for the learning experience [than getting noticed].The Vince Staples video was my first time on a set with so many people. With a large crane, multiple locations, 30 plus extras... The whole ordeal was scary - but such a huge learning experience.[vidtoken data:0]The Lacoste commercial with Venus Williams was my first time working with a big athlete AND a real actor in Saniyya Sydney, so that was it’s own experience as well.[vidtoken data:1]Best film you’ve seen this year? Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos. I also watched Cinema Paradiso for the first time this year by Giuseppe Tornatore and THAT was beautiful. It’s been on my letterboxd watch list for a minute but wow, what a beautiful film. Most recently my colleague and friend sent me a 44 min film by Kiyoshi Kurosawa called Chime. It’s not the best film but I loved it. Every frame and shot was gorgeous.
I feel like I'm in a transition phase, so I think the creative reward is right around the corner.
Favourite song/album/music artist this year? Two Star and The Dream Police by Mk.gee, Hit Me Hard And Soft by Billie Eilish, Short n Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter, and Rema’s Heis are my favorite projects from music this year and I've come back to these records the most! My favourite artists more recently have been Teezo Touchdown and Cash Cobain.Favourite music video/videos you’ve seen this year? Tailor Swif by ASAP Rocky directed by Vania Heymann & Gal Muggia - by far my favourite video of the year!360 by Charlie XCX directed by Aidan Zamiri, Witchy by Kaytranada featuring Childish Gambino directed by Bethany Vargas. The holiest time of the holiest month. I also get to be back home with my family and spend nights awake eating, praying, laughing. It’s very healing and feels like an escape from the world. Name a film or video or other creative work that had a huge influence on your career choice?I watched a Behind The Scenes of a film I don’t remember. The “making of” video was on TV on some network. I was in high school. My cousin and I happened to stumble upon it late night on a school night. I think the process was so new and so interesting to us. We decided to make a short that same week with zero knowledge whatsoever. Also every film I’ve ever watched has influenced me whether I liked them or not - but some have had a special place in my mind and heart over the years. [vidtoken data:2]
The Take Your Time video... pushed me and felt rewarding throughout the process.
In terms of music video-related jobs of the past year or so - what was the most rewarding creatively, and why?I don’t feel fully rewarded yet. This doesn’t mean the work I’ve done hasn’t been fulfilling and fun and really good. Just don’t feel rewarded. I am feeling like I am in a transition phase creatively so I think the creative reward is right around the corner!Everything I’ve done has felt good more recently and has fulfilled me in certain ways. The Take Your Time video with Sasha Keable and 6lack has creatively pushed me recently and has felt rewarding throughout the process till the end. It’s a project I’m genuinely proud of and love the new—land team for fully supporting it and backing this one and Sasha’s team for collaborating to create such a great video. What are your favourite other (non-mv) projects of the past year or so?I did a cover photoshoot for Elsa Majimbo for OkayAfrica. This has been my favourite project outside of the video work. The shoot itself was very beautiful. The location, the energy, the styling looks, hair. I loved that process so much. And plus it was an honour shooting an East African legend, considering I am East African myself. It felt truly authentic and fun.[imgtoken data:1]What’s the most surprising thing that’s happened this year? Finding the new—land family and getting our first project on the board. Working with Sasha and 6lack! Being back home in Seattle with my family most of this year. Starting a company with my friends called neo-neo.I think leaving LA for a significant amount of time has been another surprising thing. I’ve lived here almost five straight years now without really leaving much unless it was for work. But I’ve recently been out of LA a lot. Also going to Umrah in Mecca (Islamic pilgrimage) this past year with my mom and family was surprising and AMAZING. A very cleansing experience.
Each year some of the best music videos come out and the crews are doing it for nothing - you can feel pure energy and creativity oozing out.
Most annoying/irksome thing that’s been going on this year (work-related or otherwise)? The most genuinely disappointing and annoying thing I’ve witnessed this year has been finding out so many people I know are in support of genocide. I know directors, producers, and others that’d repost terrible things this time last year. I remember adult professionals reposting “Kill Them All” posts but we won’t speak on that too much. But yeah that’s been annoying to see and quite disappointing. Your top suggestion to change and improve how the music video industry works? Maybe more ethical practices from labels and paying people and production, and having better budgets. That’s a reoccurring issue I’ve seen. I think outside of just money and overall respect for directors and crew, the music video industry is killing it due to the dope creatives. Each year some of the best music videos come out and the crews are doing it for nothing. You can feel the pure energy and creativity oozing out of these videos. It’s genuine. What are you looking forward to most for the rest of the year? More music videos. More work in the U.K. specifically. More projects with friends. More life. Peace and freedom for the peoples of Palestine, Sudan, Congo, and the rest of the world. I also am looking forward to making more time for myself and taking care of myself first. I want to go back to creating for fun and not for work!• Abdi Ibrahim is on new—land's new talent roster, represented for music videos by Mouthpiece; watch more of Abdi's work here.

Together with music videos for three songs from Cat Burns's debut album early twenties, Libby Burke Wilde has directed an accompanying short film.A cinematic rendering of Burns's coming-of-age album, the short narrative - also called early twenties - is a mirror to the transformative years of your adolescent years, touching on themes of mental health, friendship, queer love, and loneliness.Cat’s conversational lyrics are almost tangible in Libby’s script, interweaving the lives of five friends on a night out, all at different stages in life.[imgtoken data:1]Piecing together the narrative between the music videos for alone, end game and met someone - also directed by Libby Burke Wilde - the short film stars a wealth of emerging British acting talent: India Amarteifio (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story), Sam Reuben (Everything Now), Aiyana Goodfellow (The Outlaws), Melina Sinadinou (Beyond Paradise), and BAFTA-nominated Samuel Bottomley (How To Have Sex, Sundown).“Your early 20s are one of the most transformative times in life, which I think is what makes it so memorable," says Burke Wilde. "It’s a time of limbo between childhood and fully-fledged adulthood. Responsibilities are creeping in, but some things are still carefree. [imgtoken data:2]"It’s also a time when your relationship to yourself and others is changing dramatically. Cat mentions all these things in her album. Not knowing where you want to be, not feeling comfortable in your own skin, loneliness and having low self-esteem. All universal themes that feel so heightened in your early twenties."I wanted to make a film that touches on many of these feelings. It reflects the dramatic highs and epic lows of this time in your life, but leaves you with a feeling of hope for the future."

Emmanuelle Soffé directs Poppy Ajudha's Playgod, a powerful pro-choice statement prompted by the recent Alabama abortion bill and other pressures on women’s freedom across the globeThe song questions the right of men to lay claim to women’s bodies, and Soffé's video grounds Ajudha’s anger in a series of low-lit scenes, with a chorus of women exploding into movement in time with the song’s ferocious chorus, making a physical expression of women’s grief and rage.Elsewhere, scenes depicting Ajudha in Virgin Mary-esque stylings show the grief that even Mary herself feels for Christian ideologies being warped in the name of ‘God’, while a glitter-laden performance from the singer depicts the sanctity of the female body.[imgtoken data:1]"When I first heard this track, with just a few hours to write a script, it struck me that the most powerful way to approach a video concept for a song like this was through simple and raw expression of emotion," says Soffé. "An expression of the emotion that we, as women, feel when we watch things like the Texas Heartbeat Act unfold on our screens. The horror and the grief we feel on behalf of our sisters (and trans/non-binary siblings) on the other side of the planet. The anger, the rage, the frustration, the helplessness. And the way that these powerful emotions unite us, bind us together, make us stronger and ever more determined for change."At its essence, the concept for this video is about Releasing. Releasing our and the collective trauma; a method of communicating not (just) with words, but with the heart."

Danish director Bertil Vorre's video for Joshua Lindemann's remix of Yoav's Blood Moon brings us into an increasingly tense stand-off between father and son: as the young man expresses himself with his friends through choreography and dance, he comes against the opposition of his furious Dad. As the mood in the family apartment darkens, the older man is like a coiled spring about to explode... until something surprising happens - possibly the consequence of the blood-red moon over the city. With strong performances from his cast - particularly Jens Andersen and Frederik Levin Jensen as the father and son - Vorre builds the tension to the verge of melodrama, before delivering his thoroughly enjoyable twist in the story.Dad realises he cannot resist the beat either, the old hypocrite, and the result is mesmerising.

Bjarke Underbjerg directs an alluring and romantic promo for George Cosby. Shot in Milan and featuring breathtaking architecture and cityscapes, the video follows a narrative vignette between Cosby and an enigmatic woman, played by Lara Di Bello, who is continuously walking a few yards in front of him.Contrasting reality and fantasy, Cosby playfully follows the character, but it becomes more and more unclear if she is real or a figment of his imagination. The cinematography by Andrea Dutto is gorgeous, enhanced by the sun-soaked scenery and lots of silky-smooth Steadicam setups. And Bjarke Underbjerg maintains a sense of mystery throughout this beautiful-looking piece.

MØ takes on the formidable Globe of Death on her motorbike, before being catapulted into a new idyllic world in Joanna Nordahl's dazzling video for Live to Survive.Nordahl uses a combination of spectacular action, portraiture and fiery VFX to create a visual metaphor for the sentiment behind the song that marks the return of the artist otherwise known as Karen Marie Ørsted. In the first part of this breathless video we get the all-action MØ, as two bikes revolve around inside the enclosed Globe of Death. Then she is transported to the countryside by a beautiful lake, having come through the other side of her extraordinary challenge. MØ says of Live to Survive: “I hope you’ll dance to it feeling empowered in yourself, with all your vulnerability, strength, beauty, and flaws, and remember that life is a constant dance of ups and downs.”[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

Swedish rapper Robin Nazari collaborates with new-land director Maceo Frost in this poignant ode to Robin’s late father, who passed away in 2004.The video, which was co-written by Maceo, illustrates Robin’s life, growing up in a culture where vulnerability was seen as weakness and silence was seen as strength. Unable to express his emotions, Robin recounts how his grief turned to rage.

Jonatan Egholm Keis directs a beachside epic for James McMorrow & Rudimental collaboration on Be Somebody. Shot across various locations in Denmark, the video represents a crumbling relationship through abstract vignettes and choppy, intense edits. Visualising the upbeat music through frenetic movement, we see a couple ride a motorbike at dusk, freefall down sandy dunes and have fiery, heat-of-the-moment arguments, whilst backdropped by dazzling landscapes. There might not be much of a narrative, but the concept is all the better for it - and DoP Robin Holtz ensures that every frame is a worthy still image in its own right.[imgtoken data:1]

Bjarke Underbjerg rounds off a trilogy of videos for Swedish artist LÉON, with the introspective promo for Seventeen. Through the reunification of the indie pop star and her first love, we see the different ways in which posing for a camera and posing for a person intertwines - the constant switch between vulnerability and immovability. In short it's like the age old question: who are we through the eyes of another? DoP Adam Jandrup carries over the same cinematic, emotive cinematography from the previous two promos, with an added energy and flair towards the crescendo of the concept. Beautiful work and a striking way to end a special series of videos.

Summer is coming. And Casper Balslev's film Summer - Document, captures the very essence of the season, as it happened for the youth of Denmark in the long hot summer of 2018, with original music from Simon Littaur providing the soundtrack. From teens swimming at the lake, mosh-diving metal fans at a festival, boys and girls on motorbikes, friends at the fairground, Balslev focusses on the faces, the sights and sounds of suburbia and the countryside.Inspired by old travelogue and newsreel films from the 1940s and '50s, this is his document of the time, shot all over Denmark last summer, and as such Balslev has created something very special from the everyday.

Here's a hell of a 'what if' scenario: what if Iggy Pop narrated a nature documentary wherein the animal essentially plays the part of Josh Brolin in the first part of No Country For Old Men?Well, wonder no more. Casper Balslev's video for Alt-J's In Cold Blood starts off innocently enough. It's the intrepid, wily adventures of your average wood mouse, and it's beautifully shot and majestically paced like the best the BBC can offer - right up until the point where our cute little mousey pal scuttles over a still-fresh disembodied human hand and into the aftermath of what we can only assume was a deal gone very bad indeed. As far as narrative left-turns go, this one is loaded with visual hooks and mysteries to unpack. But essentially the moral is clear: the dangers faced by the plucky mouse in the natural world, pale in comparison to the darkness perpetrated by humankind.

Casper Balslev returns to music videos with this knowing hodge-podge of lovely visuals shot on various formats revealing the alleged intimate lives of Danish band Communions, whose song It's Like Air comes across like a great longlost 90s Britpop anthem by Suede or Blur. The VHS montage sees the video skipping between the band having a kick about, rehearsing, and hanging around a race track. With its split screen home video aesthetic, the video is as referential as the guitar pop that soundtracks it.

Danish band Off Bloom take us on a weekend away with their mates in the video directed by Nadia Marquard Otzen that's running on 90s-DIY nostalgia.Shot in a house an hour away from Copenhagen, the band lets loose in a series of unusual scenarios as well as spontaneous, candid sequences. They are a fun-loving pop band with a definite grunge-rock attitude, exploring the area and setting fire to chairs, dressing up in old fashions, performing in living rooms, dancing on trees - and playing in tall plantations at night. It all adds up to a visual feast of lo-fi vignettes, orchestrated with delightful aplomb by Nadia.

Anders Malmberg creates a sensual and erotic world of youthful sexual discovery for Danish band Lightwave Empire's Pleasure And Pain, and an unabashed celebration of the body beautiful, with fine photography by DoP Linda Wassberg. "The video is an exploration of different borderlands," says Malmberg. "As the title suggests, the borderline between pain and pleasure, but also the borderland between sensuality and sexuality, as well as humor and melancholy. The ambition was to create a warm and positive video, a 'seize the day' atmosphere, a sense of freedom, flow and optimism, but with an existential depth, and a sense of doubt built into the joyful and hedonistic feeling."

Taken from Mads Damsgaard Kristiansen aka Reptile Youth’s latest EP Away, Arab Spring Break Part 1 & 2 is an extended track which has lended itself perfectly to what is effectively a lovely, pastel-washed short film by Daniel Kragh-Jacobsen. Captivating and bittersweet, the sensitivity Kragh-Jacobsen has with his characters results in an inspired, true-to-life piece of work. “I wanted to portray relationships," the director told Clash Music. "But this story is not only about relationships between lovers, it’s also about friendship. To me the dynamic in relationships is a very fragile thing, and it’s so interesting that it can change from positive to negative in a split second. And it’s fascinating that we can’t control it. I don’t have an answer to what is good and bad when you’re in a relationship. I simply wanted to try and portray feelings that I have experienced, and I believe others have as well.”

Singer-songwriter James Bay - winner of the Critic's Choice Award at this year's Brits and touted as the Next Big Thing – has prompted the welcome return to music videos of Daniel Kragh-Jacobsen, the Danish director who made a big impact with his sensitively handled mini-dramas in videos for When Saints Go Machine (which won an MVA in 2011), Rhye and others. For the most part, the video for Let It Go is more about atmosphere than narrative, as the troubadour from Hitchin appears lost in his thoughts while a fire spreads in the house around him. But that sense of drama flares in the final minute of the video, as James leaves the blazing house to join a girl in a car, and reveal a snapshot of their uneasy relationship.
