Dimmer’s Degrees Of Existence by Special Problems
David Knight - 28th Oct 2008
Four characters, one day, pretty much the same shit. New Zealand directing team Special Problems (that's Cam, Joel and Darron) chronicle the minutiae of the lives of four people living within the same apartment complex.
It's Groundhog Day-style repetition, without Bill Murray. But despite that glaring omission, it's hypnotically watchable and looks great. And SP did it pretty much all themselves.
"Dimmer really wanted a non-performance, concept-based piece for the video," report Special Problems, who should be based in London pretty soon we're told, and already based at Pulse Films and repped by OBmanagement. "After coming up with the idea we realized just how big the project was. So we basically had to make it ourselves. We shot HD - Sony EX1 to be precise - strapped a few old Nikon stills lenses on and only used available daylight.
"The edit was done incrementally over the project so the shoot days were really spread out, allowing the direction and plot to organically evolve as we went. Hats off to the label for being so hands off!"
