Chapel Club’s Surfacing by Dan Sully
David Knight - 17th Jan 2011
Themes of sin and redemption pervade Dan Sully's new video for Chapel Club, where an American Pentecostal congregation are filled with the Spirit at the hands of a demagogic preacher - observed by a skeptical, sensual girl.
Hot on the heels of his gritty video for Miles Kane, Dan conjures another big cinematic experience and gets some big, eye-bulging performances from his cast. And it all works well with Chapel Club's intense sound.
"This is a video based on the practises of Pentecostal churches in Appalachian America. Serpent handling, 'falling in the spirit' and 'dancing in the spirit' respectively.
"The filmmaking gods looked down kindly on us with this one. Everything went perfectly on the day and I think confining a music video to one room with only a couple of lighting setups worked in our favour. It gave me the time I needed to work with the actors. There was no possibility of obscuring half-arsed performances with lens flares and clever edits in this video, and I was really happy with the whole cast. The takes where everyone flung themselves around whilst 'dancing in the spirit' will stay with me for a while. "Every single member of the crew batted this one out the park. Thanks to Emily and the band for believing in what was quite a left-field idea on paper."
