South London Ordnance ft. Brolin 'Black Acre' by Phoebe Arnstein
David Knight - 23rd Sept 2013
Photographer Phoebe Arnstein has teamed with DoP Tasha Back to create Rare, a new London-based production company, and the video for South London Ordnance's Black Acre, featuring Brolin on vocals, is the outfit's first offering.
Both sensual and surgically precise, it's a noteworthy directorial debut by Phoebe, with impressive cinematography by Tasha. Together with the eerie presence of Brolin - masked with only his mouth visible - the video is dominated by the image of a female form trapped in polythene, gradually emerging out of her casing - representing the "regrowth of human form", according to the filmmakers.Â
Phoebe Arnstein: "Black Acre is a beautiful track with succinct technical shifts within the piece. I wanted to mimic these stages with a visual story about a bionic re-birth. Brolin’s eerie vocals aid the growth of the human form with an almost surgical precision. We witness her body gain strength from this biological relationship between her and Brolin's character. The shapes made by the human body, under very precise direction, interest me a lot on camera.
"It was great to explore this intrigue with moving image, as this fascination with the human body (especially the back) originated from photography. You can see quite clearly from the video that this manipulation of the human form is a recurring theme."
