Pixies 'Snakes' by Mark Locke
David Knight - 25th Mar 2014
Mark Locke pitched his video for Pixies' Snakes as 'an episode of Breaking Bad directed by Luis Buñuel' - and that's pretty much what he's achieved here. It's a fast-paced tale, marked out by a distinctively propulsive editing style, with a prevailing mood of paranoia and impending doom - and a disconcerting irreverent twist as the main protagonists are marked by their very special appearance...
Suffice this is all about something much sweeter than crystal meth...
MARK LOCKE: "Pixies are my all-time favourite band so I really wanted to get the gig, but I knew what a long shot it was. Though at the same time I had this odd feeling that I was going to get it, especially when I was writing up my notes and a dead ant dropped out of them. There are ants in the video, and I've never found an ant in my stuff before, so it felt weirdly 'written'.
"However getting Snakes made felt anything but 'written'. I've been unwell for almost a year, couldn't walk properly for a while, etc, and I'm still not great. So the thought of pulling a production together in LA (I'm UK), especially an ambitious one on a budget, was pretty overwhelming.
"The influences are probably obvious! Buñuel, Jodorowsky, some Blue Velvet, also 70s cop shows and Breaking Bad. There's also a bit of Sapphire And Steel in there hopefully. Fingers crossed it's a video you can watch more than once, and get a bit more from.
"I have to give huge props to the crew out there who made it happen, especially Mike Manzoori who did so much (see credits), and also to The Mill London who helped so much with post. No video can happen without an amazing team, obviously, but it's especially true in this case."
