Clark 'To Live And Die In Grantham' by Christopher Hewitt
David Knight - 30th Mar 2015
Chris Hewitt follows up his experimental animation-based promo for Clark's Winter Linn with something very different for the techno stalwart and Warp Records legend's To Live And Die In Grantham. And it also reconfigures some familiar elements in a refreshing way.Â
With a young man striding purposefully through a windswept trailer park in a English coastal resort, closely tracked by Steve Annis's camera, it immediately establishes a sense of impending threat. But that early sense of spine-tingling tension transforms into something more.. well, spiritual.Â
With excellent choreography by Holly Blakey, young actor/dancer Lawrence Harp brings the euphoria of the dancefloor to the back end of beyond - Jaywick in Essex, in fact, rather than Grantham. It's the result of a local shaman blowing smoke into the back of his head, and it's a sight to behold. Marvellous stuff.Â
