Lawrence Rothman ft. Angel Olsen 'California Paranoia' by Floria Sigismondi
Cat Velez - 20th Oct 2015
Floria Sigismondi's latest in her series for LA-singer Lawrence Rothman, for the exceptional rock and roll title of California Paranoia is the latest where Rothman embodies nine different personas (he does that in all his songs and videos apparently), while Floria exercises her trademark brand of gothic-influenced glamour.
This time we are invited into a cavernous Old Hollywood mental institution where a bearded, albino nurse, played by Rothman, sifts through a mess of anti-psychotic meds he is charged with dispensing to an unstable, flamboyant crop of patients - a gallery of oddballs (created by if not played by Rothman; maybe he plays some of them too?) who soon involve the nurse in their baroque delusions.Â
After much cavorting, Sigismondi leads us to the gruesome finale, which puts a visceral, absurd punctuation mark on the end of the film. But also kind of sweet.
