Eliza And The Bear 'Friends' by Markus Schroder
David Knight - 6th May 2016
It's clear from the start of Markus Schroder's video for Eliza And The Bear's Friends that one of this closely-bonded quartet of young people, desperately evading the long arm of the law, is not of this world. And Schroder creates an amalgam of familiar storylines from Eighties movies (which he lists below - and to which you could add John Sayles' less famous The Brother From Another Planet) in a convincing fashion for the Friends video, shot on location in sun-kissed Buenos Aires.
MARKUS SCHRODER:
"The lyrics of the song are straightforward. I wanted to add a little twist to the buddy idea by adding the science-fiction element. Kind of a mixture between Starman, ET and Stand By Me, this video was very special for me, as it was the first time I’ve been back to Buenos Aires for seven years after living there for almost four.
"We were very lucky to be able to shoot the beginning section in my friends’ rundown house in San Telmo, which is soon to be converted into a hostel. That location just looked great on camera and allowed for elaborate camerawork. We did it all with natural light, using the textures and colours of the old house.
"The car was a real challenge as it kept overheating and had to cool down for ages. Additionally our actress had real trouble driving it as it’s so old and clunky. Poor her… she was also scared as hell crossing the abandoned railway bridge, which didn’t have a floor underneath the sleepers!"
