Metronomy 'Old Skool' by Dawn Shadforth

David Knight - 12th May 2016

Dawn Shadforth hands the irrepressible Sharon Horgan a delicious scenario and magnificent makeover for Metronomy's Old Skool.

Horgan is the 70s housewife hosting a houseparty in deepest English suburbia, where her anxiety and neurosis bubbles away close to the surface - and her husband, played by Ben Crompton, provides a steadying, and somewhat ominous counterpoint.

These superbly-sketched characters, and the evening's events, sits within a visual palette that is nothing less than gorgeous throughout, from Ben Fordesman's photography to the remarkable fashion styling and hair. Wonderful.

DAWN SHADFORTH:

"Old Skool is a brilliant track and inspired me on many levels.  When I was sent It I had just binge watched Catastrophe, I read an interview where Sharon Horgan mentioned she was a big Metronomy fan. Sharon has been a bit of a hero of mine since Pulling, it was too tempting to ignore. The treatment was written half with her in mind, but also thinking it might never happen.  In the end we had an amazing cast with Sharon and then Ben Crompton adding some killer moves in the mix.

"The strange suburban world and themes of anxiety, alienation and release chimed, from my point of view, with the lyrics which have a dark and fragmented quality."
