Laura Mvula 'Show Me Love' by Damian Weilers
Luke Bather - 29th June 2016
Laura Mvula gives a solitary eulogy at her own funeral in this beautifully shot, understated video from Damian Weilers.
Having been invited personally by Mvula to direct this video, Weilers and DoPÂ Charlie Goodger deliver some beautiful scenes in a mixture of aspect ratios. The scenes inside the church in this video are a treat to behold - light pours over the space perfectly and the video takes full advantage of this.
DAMIAN WEILERS:
"It was a privilege to be personally asked by Laura to make this film for her. Knowing Laura’s history this track is extremely personal. My take on it was definitely a lot to do with the breakdown of her marriage and that a part of her had died, but the part that survived realised she has to love her self in order to move on.
"The echoey beginning of the track reminded me of the sounds created in a church. It then moves to a non-echo voice which is Laura’s subconscious. I changed this format to a polaroid like image which to me resembles a memory. She goes from a beautiful happy place to a dark place in her head. This is all a metaphor of how she feels and her state of mind.
"I used the church scene as though she was praying and giving a eulogy at her own funeral. She mourns, but life goes on and there is light at the end of the tunnel as we can see the light through the church window. I shot the whole thing in one day in my newly adopted home town of Folkestone, Kent. The sun shone for us that day and it was a really special, emotional day for all involved."Â
