Beach Baby 'U R' by Eoin Glaister
David Knight - 19th July 2016
Eoin Glaister's video for Beach Baby's U R finds a new way to explore a trauma that affects almost everyone at some point or another. Lily Newmark is the girl going through the 'Five stages of Break-Up Grief' during an English summer of cinematic loveliness, haunted by Beach Baby frontman Lawrence - evidently the object of her affections.Â
It's wistful, surreal, and of a piece with a song displaying fine old school guitar jangliness. Newmark deadpans her way from Denial to Mania and beyond - and Glaister reveals below that most of the crew on the shoot turned out to be experts on the subject.
EOINÂ GLAISTER:
"Break-ups tend to be messy, complicated things. Websites such as sheknows.com and thelovewhisperer.com, however, divide them up into five simple stages. This seemed like an appropriately fun way into the video, one that worked with the structure of the song and also an opportunity to approach something in a slightly less linear manner.
"The concept and resultant video became exponentially better every time someone else came on board and I am very grateful and fortunate for the talent we managed to trick into working on this. Unfortunately, a good forty percent of the crew had recently come out of relationships, which led to a reasonable amount of tangled words and moonwalking out of rooms. I think the method approach had a positive impact though."
