Metaxas 'Timezones' by Savvas Stavrou

Cat Velez - 22nd Aug 2016

Savvas Stavrou's video for Cyprus-native, London-based Metaxas' song Timezones sees a couple as they struggle to keep a relationship alive despite living in different timezones.

Dividing the lovers via split screen manages to evoke the passage of time, almost in real-time. As Metaxas goes about his day while his lover sleeps, the lack of communication becoming apparent. Focusing on the little moments of Metaxas' routine, the video reveals the couple's constant disconnect. They are constantly missing each other – emotionally as well as physically – as he wakes up just as she falls asleep.

SAVVAS STAVROU:

"It was important for me to present the song's narrative almost like a short film in order to properly follow this character's trajectory throughout the day. The split screen adjusts according to his thoughts, and the connection/disconnect between him and his girlfriend happens visually as they sometimes look towards each other's screen, yet mostly face the other way. Metaxas' emotional journey is punctuated by the passers-by entering and exiting his world, highlighting all that could have been."
