Boxed In 'Melt' by Tom Wakeling

Here's a lyric video with a difference - it actually gets more interesting the longer you watch it. As it alternates between displaying the words of the song, with shots of a black rectangle, that is quite an achievement.
But the strength of Tom Wakeling's video for Melt by Boxed In, is in the approach. It was done with practical effects, entirely in-camera. The rectangle – or monolith – is a nod to more than one classic movie, of course, but the the way it's filmed, juxtaposed with light and smoke, means that it does not reveal its secrets too early. Which makes the reveal all the more impressive when it does happen.Â
TOM WAKELING:
"Nettwerk asked me to create a lyric video for Boxed In. I thought it be cool to do something with practical effects and all in camera. I was totally inspired by The Thing's title sequence, those amazing light rays burning through the dark.
"Our monolith was actually a mini monolith, only about a metre tall. It was given some help through the use of wide angle lenses and low angles. As it was a lyric video, we didn't have much time or resources, but we had a great time on shoot, though we all inhaled far too much fake smoke."
