Haim 'Want You Back' by Jake Schreier

David Knight - 23rd June 2017

One-take videos are no longer a rarity, that's for sure. And that's probably why the element of jeopardy that was associated with them, that sense of something momentous happening in real time, is not a given any more. But Jake Schreier's video for Haim's Want You Back aspires to be a modern-day Unfinished Sympathy.

We're on Ventura Boulevard at dawn, and as Este Haim starts walking, then joined by sisters Danielle and Alana, it's uncannily deserted. And as the girls walk and occasionally sing, they are throwing dance moves that exactly reflect different parts in the song.

The way its made, in one continuous steadicam move, means it is clearly, imperfectly authentic. That in itself makes Want You Back compelling, and overall, it's the Haim event we've been waiting for. As they reveal, it took a while to get it right.
