J Hus 'Spirit' by Hugo Jenkins

David Knight - 2nd Aug 2017

J Hus, Mercury Prize-nominated for his album Common Sense, explores his time spent in prison in 2015 on the song Spirit. "I wanted a song that could really resonate with people in that situation...I made this one to try to keep everyone’s head up. It’s a purely positive message,” he has said. The video follows that mood with a vibrant portrait of life in Jamestown Accra, in Ghana, captured by Hugo Jenkins.

Hugo captures the towns’ energy from the streets, markets and shanty towns, to the boxing gym and speedway circuit, and gathers some arresting visuals of the community at work and play, working in J Hus's performance too.

“I wanted to capture this spirit but also keep the essence of who J Hus is," he says. "Capturing Hus on a miniature journey through Accra, meeting people and ending on an intimate show to me felt like the most authentic approach.”
