Oren Lavie 'Second Hand Lovers' by Oren Lavie
David Knight - 31st May 2018
Released in January, Oren Lavie's video for Second Hand Lovers has been garnering acclaim and awards ever since. After a Jury award at SXSW and being selected for screening at the Tribeca Film Festival, it's just picked up the Best Concept prize at the Berlin Music Video Awards. All this attention is entirely deserved.
The Israeli artist has made a habit of creating memorable choreography-led videos for his songs and Second Hand Lovers is subtitled Bedroom Crime #2, the sequel to last year's Did You Really Say No (aka Bedroom Crime #1), featuring Vanessa Paradis. As with that one, a group of dancers occupy Lavie's domestic space, to act almost as visible ghosts, reacting to the vissicitudes of his emotional life, through sensitive choreography by Maya Brinner.
The added dimension of Second Hand Lovers is how Lavie also tells of the arc of a romantic relationship. The result is a beautifully crafted and poignant piece of work.Â
