Agoria 'Embrace' by Jessy Moussallem
Promonews - 6th Dec 2018
Jessy Moussallem brings us into the world of an tight-knit army unit - training, bonding, relaxing, fighting - within the ruins of a building on the shores of the Meditteranean, in this hypnotic video for Agoria.
As she explains here, Moussalem was inspired by a family tragedy during a traumatic time for her country - the civil war in Lebanon in 1983. Here she dramatises the days and hours before actual conflict, where a militia of young men build up the camaraderie that they will take into battle.
JESSY MOUSSALEM:Â
“My uncle was killed at the age of 22, two days before Christmas in December 1983, while fighting for a militia during the civil war in Lebanon.Â
"Growing up and hearing stories about him and his comrades, I questioned the militarization of human beings; how these young soldiers are trained to kill, and at the same time willing to sacrifice their lives. This film explores notions of heroism and sacrifice while capturing the life of soldiers in between wars."
