Lilla Vargen 'Why Wait' by TJ O'Grady-Peyton
Rob Ulitski - 27th Sept 2019
Over ten thousand people are living in emergency accommodation or sleeping rough in Ireland, and TJ O'Grady-Peyton tackles the subject matter with an empathetic and careful touch in this video for Lilla Vargen.Â
Why Wait is a poignant and emotional track, and the documentary-style video is similar in its qualities. A mixture of portraits and snapshot vignettes of Dublin's homeless, the guerrilla-filming style helps keep the video grounded and real, with a raw honesty emanating from every frame about the human cost of the city's housing crisis.
TJ O'GRADY-PEYTON:
"We shot this piece over the course of seven days in Dublin last year. This year has seen record numbers of people (10,000+) living in emergency accommodation or sleeping rough in Ireland. This piece deals with that subject matter. I also took part in a filmmaking masterclass in the Amazon jungle, mentored by Werner Herzog in 2018. After coming home to Ireland I was inspired to make something ultra low budget and guerilla. This is a result of that experience.
"Having volunteered at a charity called The Simon Community in Dublin, I also saw first-hand the effect the housing/homelessness crisis was having on the city. Finally - I was very fortunate to get a chance to work with a team of really talented artists on this project.
"Ana.Projects worked directly with us on a 35mm print of the offline edit, to create a number of animations. They scratched into the film emulsion before filling the lines with different coloured inks, playing with the captured footage to bring certain shots new life."
