Hot Chip 'Positive' by Sebastian Strasser
Rob Ulitski - 3rd Feb 2020
The spirituality of dance and movement, and what it means to be alive, is explored in Sebastian Strasser's ambitious video for Hot Chip's Positive.Â
Shot in Kiev, the visual focuses on a group of young adults who are working hard to survive on the streets, finding pockets of respite through dancing and letting loose. In another narrative strand, a priest is seen visiting different locations and blessing unusual things - soldiers and their guns, car engines, and even dolphins. As the video progresses the two strands start to merge, as the action in one scenario is mirrored in the other.
Beautifully shot by Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the raw aesthetic is very documentary-like, capturing life as it happens without obsessing about lighting or composition. The story is the main character here, and the strong performances across the board help bring it to life with passion and authenticity.
