Empathy Test 'Monsters' by Calum Macdiarmid
Rob Ulitski - 18th May 2020
A squabbling couple find a mysterious robed figure waiting for them in Calum Macdiarmid's haunting visual for Monsters.Â
Driving into a multi-storey carpark, the couple are confronted by a statuesque character in an unusual mask and robe, who then performs, transfixing them with hypnotic and otherwordly movements.Â
Quickly spinning into a whirlwind of sex, regret, happiness and satisfaction, the themes are very much open to interpretation, with an undercurrent of complex emotions and events leading to this point in the story.Â
"The idea for the film was inspired by marriage therapy, horror films, and dogging," says Macdiarmid. "I liked the idea of couples going on these brilliant seedy adventures at night, but what if they found something even more magical than just sex?"Â
