Montrell 'Aqua' by Boyter & Pope

Rob Ulitski - 16th July 2020

A woman seeks out love and a new beginning, in directing/DoP duo Boyter & Pope's stylish video for Montrell's Aqua.

Opening with a short conversation on a beach, the woman, played by Victoria Valcheva, explains to her love interest that if you open your eyes underwater, you see the one you love. When she realises that this isn't the case in her relationship, she gets her own back and finds a new man to open her eyes - and heart - to.

Beautifully shot by DoP Francis Boyter, the vintage art direction and hazy colour palette softens what is actually quite a dark narrative.

Anchored by performances from Valcheva and Montrell frontman Jonny Taylor which are both humourous and heartbreaking in equal measure, Pope presents a dangerous love triangle wrapped in a bittersweet package.

WILLIAM POPE:

"The idea for the Aqua promo was based loosely on a 1930s film by Jean Vigo called L'Atalante, with visual influences from the 1960s and 70s French new wave.

"We filmed in a water tank, in a studio and a couple of domestic locations with Jonny and Mikey from Montrell, and Victoria Valcheva who gives a wonderful performance.

"The film is a blend of retro-styled nostalgia with really dark undertones, riffing on the themes of paranoia and infidelity."
