'Malaria' by Andzej Gavriss
Promonews - 28th July 2020
Andzej Gavriss's short film for the charity Houseless Not Homeless combines imaginative fantasy and grim reality to explain how 'houselessness' can happen among people who call America their home.
A hardworking businessman is hit by a double-whammy of misfortune, losing his job and then bitten by a malaria-infected mosquito, and thereby plummets from the commanding heights to the streets - via a nightmarish fever-dream in the arid desert.Â
The LA-based Latvian director - who has made a big impact with his video earlier this year such as You're Born for Russian artist Aigel - has created an unusual and memorable charity film. The use of the infected mosquito as a metaphor for everyday misfortune is inspired, and that allows Gavriss to create a powerful vision to dovetail with reportage photography to illustrate the crisis and the film's real message: over half a million people who call the United States their home are 'house-less' in 2020, and something needs be done about that.Â
