Leopard Skull 'Ghost' by Sébastien Petretti
Rob Ulitski - 11th Nov 2020
Sébastien Petretti explores isolation and paranoia in his impressionist-style promo for Leopard Skull - aka Harm Pauwels.
In a deserted cove by the sea at sunset, two frogmen are armed and dangerous, pointing their harpoons at each other. Following this dramatic spark, the video follows through a surreal tapestry of vignettes, clouded by a sense of mystery, pathos, black comedy and dread. And the appearance of the eponymous Ghost.
This is a striking piece, beautifully shot in black and white by Petretti, doubling as DoP, rather evocative of Anton Corbijn's classic work with Depeche Mode. The high contrast aesthetic is perfectly suited to the atmosphere, and the choice of costume and styling represents the faceless society outside our front doors.
"The psychological theme is something that runs through my debut album Welcome Home," Pauwels explains. "It's an attempt to better understand the people in my immediate environment and in our current society.
"Ghost in particular is very topical for me. In a way the writing process of this song aroused an imprisoned and almost claustrophobic feeling. After a while you start to wonder what is still reality and what is not." And Petretti's video captures that feeling well.
