Orla Gartland 'Pretending' by Rosie Brear
Promonews - 11th Nov 2020
Producer Rosie Brear makes a notable directing debut for Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland, dramatizing the artist's party-fatigue from the perspective of her reflection in the mirror.
The song Pretending is about exactly that - the exhausting business of putting on a front, not being entirely yourself, when conversing with strangers. Brear focusses on the moment when Gartland is taking time out at a fancy dress party in the bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror - which becomes the portal of all the action, as other partygoers continually invade the space.
It's an entertaining and compelling device to deliver the narrative arc, and the message of the song. Brear, producer of videos for Declan McKenna, Sports Team, Joesef, and others this year - and also this one - shows she is amply capable of doing the directing thing too.
