Fran, Carlinhos do Complexo, Bibi Caetano 'Visceral' by Pedro Alvarenga
David Knight - 28th June 2021
In this enigmatic, beautifully photographed music film directed by Pedro Alvarenga, the relationship between two brothers dramatically changes following a supernatural event in a small village in Bahia, Brazil.
Alvarenga's film for the song Visceral by Fran, Carlinhos do Complexo and Bibi Caetano combines an authentic portrayal of the simple, tough lives of the lovals in this tropical coastal region in north-east Brazil, captured by Bernardo Negri's splendid cinematography, with an element of sci-fi: the younger brother engages with an alien force, represented as a glowing red ball, and undergoes a mysterious transformation.
The sci-fi element is the driving force behind the overriding emotion of the film - a poignant sense of loss. As Alvarenga explains: "Visceral is a story about loss, after-life and, most importantly, closure."
