Animal Collective 'We Go Back' by Winston Hacking & Michael Enzbrunner

David Knight - 2nd Feb 2022

Winston Hacking, the king of collage, now embraces the technique of photogrammetry, collaborating with Michael Enzbrunner on this video for Animal Collective.

The video for We Go Back - from Time Skiffs, the first studio album by Animal Collective in more than half a decade - takes us through a distinct arrangement of random visual elements, as is a hallmark of much of Winston Hacking's work. But unlike earlier videos where he has used cut-out 2D art and collage as his practice, here he employs photogrammetry - the process that involves taking overlapping photographs of an object, structure or space and converting them into 2D or 3D digital models.

Collaborating with Enzbrunner on the direction, and Chuck Diep on the photogrammetry, the style works well in visualizing Animal Collective's eery and somewhat disembodied version of classic pop.

"It was a thrill to work with Animal Collective - they trusted our sense of play and commitment to spontaneity which is mirrored in their sound," says Hacking. "The video is composed of scanned locations, miniature sets and collage cutouts that embrace the lo-fi 3D aesthetic inherent in photogrammetry."
