The Beatles 'Now And Then - The Last Beatles Song' by Oliver Murray
Promonews - 6th Nov 2023
The release of Now And Then - The Beatles' 'last song' - is accompanied by a short doc directed by Oliver Murray which tells the fascinating story in how a song that originated from a rough-sounding demo cassette (made by John Lennon in the late 1970s) has finally been completed and released.Â
With a combination of exclusive footage, material from The Beatles' huge archive, and audio commentary from the surviving Fab Four members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Sean Ono Lennon and director Peter Jackson, Murray's 12 minute film cogently explains the protracted process, that involved an abortive attempt to complete the song in the Nineties.
At that point George Harrison was alive, and the film features footage (video and audio) of those sessions that resulted in two new Beatles songs being completed, 25 years after the band split up. With home movie footage of Lennon in the late 70s, as well as recent footage of McCartney and Starr regrouping to record Now And Then, this is a poignant as well as hugely informative short doc by Oliver Murray.
It goes without saying this is essential viewing for Beatles fans - while Peter Jackson has also directed the official video for the song, again drawing the different Beatles' eras together.
