James Tonic 'Stuck In LA' by MOM
Rob Ulitski - 12th Dec 2024
Directing duo MOM direct an experimental cinematic epic for singer-songwriter James Tonic that leaves a lasting impression.Â
The video for Stuck In LA plays out across a wistful extended opening scene, including dialogue and the Morntreal-born musician's musings in French, together with a dreamlike performance montage.Â
Tinged with surrealism and a sense of misplacement, the video by the husband-and-wife directing team sees Tonic hooked up to a old reel-to-reel tape machine, and motoring up and down an arid landscape in a 70s sedan whilst being tormented by his past - appearing in the form of a glittery, devil-red dancer, a manifestation of his ex-lover who appears in the opening sequence.Â
Dusty, sun bleached textures and intimate camera angles immerse viewers in this haunting world, which loops and twists like that one nightmare you just cannot shift. It's hauntingly reminiscent of art movies of the 70s and 80s in its strangeness - and utterly absorbing.Â
