Joel Culpepper 'Look For The Silver Lining' by Louis Hemming-Lowe
Promonews - 12th June 2025
Louis Hemming-Lowe combines a striking performance with cinematic ambition in his video for R&B singer Joel Culpepper's interpretation of Look For The Silver Lining - a track from Blue Note Records' project Chet Baker Reimagined.
Hemming-Lowe's film juxtaposes a powerful performance by Culpepper - whilst standing barechested, on top of a hut on the summit of a hill - with his dreamlike journey through a sprawling, untamed landscape in the backseat of a car. As the lyrics encourage the listener to 'look for the silver lining' and 'try to find the sunny side of life', the narrative captures a soulful inner pilgrimage.
The singer passes through symbolic vignettes: adolescent nuns smoking under a tree evoke lost innocence and quiet rebellion; a younger version of himself dressed in school uniform beside a No Swimming' sign, touching on themes of assimilation and exclusion. A vision of his mother, sitting next to him in the car, becomes an emotional anchor - an embodiment of the 'silver lining' he’s moving toward.
The film's dual structure - soaring performance and meditative odyssey - mirrors the song’s core message: that joy and sorrow, past and present, often coexist. And through it all, there's a quiet insistence on hope, beauty, and transcendence.
