Spencer Young creates a rich display of vivid images to symbolise positive messages of joy, aspiration and strength in Obongjayar's Try. The director, who has recently signed to Hello Love, has created a series of portraits of the London-based Nigerian singer-songwriter for the first release from his upcoming debut album. Some of the most striking imagery shows Obongjayar and his brightly, regally dressed dancers standing still and strong - as if in defiance of Young's backdrop of evocative, billowing skies. In contrast to a sense of imposing majesty, drive and ambition that is evoked in those moving still life portraits is the innocence of a young boy who observes Obangjayar on his TV. The boy provides the emotional heart of the video, dancing alone in a moving representation of joy, and then transported into the regal zone. From a man waiting alone in the wings for a curtain call, to a young boy peeking out from behind the net curtains, the video touches on themes of isolation and perseverance as Obongjayar sings 'It's no guarantee our lives will change, but all we do is try'.
