A new short film by British Nigerian director Renee Maria Osubu, In-Between – made in partnership by Coldplay and Choose Love – explores how relationships are affected by migration.Shot in Malta and Kenya and set to music from Coldplay’s 2024 album Moon Music, the film focusses on the story of Omar, a young refugee from Ethiopia, who is navigating life in Malta. Anchored by his East African community in Malta and phone calls across continents, Omar is suspended between two worlds: the home he misses and the one he is trying to make.The 12-minute hybrid short was predominantly cast with immigrants and refugees - all of whom were paid for their roles.The Somesuch production was supported by two refugee-focused organisations, SPARK 15 and RAAH.

Valentin Guiod's gripping Patience (or Sabali in Arabic) with music by DJ Snake - a remix of legendary Malian artists Amadou & Mariam's famous song Sabali - follows Moudou, a young Senegalese man, on his epic journey from his homeland to what he hopes is a better future.Starting from the point of when its decided he must leave his home for the family to survive, Guoid crafts the story of the migrant's clandestine odyssey across country with tremendous skill. It's a personal tale, as the migrant first leaves his Senegalese village for the big city before his journey continues across the desert, and his reality and dreams collide. It's also a widescreen epic, as Moudou experiences moments of terror and temptation, as well as sheer grinding tedium of his journey, before a spectacular climax.It's a brilliant achievement, with a wonderful performance by Alassane Diong as Moudou, as well as Omar Sy as his brother and Anna Thiandoum as his love. And by putting us so firmly in the world of one determined and above all, decent person, Guoid makes a crucial contribution to the discussion of a dominating global issue. It also features Amadou & Mariam performing Sabali, and the release of the film, made last year, also follows the death in April of Amadou Bagayoko of Amadou & Mariam.• Valentin Guiod's insights into the making of Patience here
