Tove Lo & SG Lewis - Busy Girl (Official Music Video)

David Wilson directs an ode to queer dance floors around the world, in this dazzling promo for Tove Lo & SG Lewis. Exuding a sense of uninhibited passion and dreamlike escapism, the video for Heat features a cast of dozens, a mix of nightlife staples and new faces intermingled in the crowd, as Tove dominates the catwalk. [imgtoken data:1]Larger than life in every way, the video boasts slick cinematography, with gold-hued strobes and high contrast lighting creating an enigmatic, feverish atmosphere. Even more significantly, the video encapsulates a community, a moment in time and a sense of freedom that permeates every boundary imaginable. Truly unparalleled work from Wilson and team, and a really fun complement to the pulsating track - and perhaps the most noteworthy cameo from double-ended sex toys since that scene in Requiem For A Dream.

David Wilson is back, taking Mabel to places she has never gone before, in the unapologetic and hugely inventive promo for Look At My Body Pt II.Accompanied by the sultry Shygirl, Wilson presents Mabel in a succession of witty scenes which challenge the male gaze. He directs the singers through takedowns of the established historical context in art and religion, and shows that it's the female who is the superpower of the human race. It's a visual counterpoint to Mabel's quip throughout the song: sorry, not sorry. And for fans of David Wilson's work it provides a number of treats - not least when the live action vignettes are interrupted by a bravura animation section, where Mabel transforms into a giant Earth mother and merges into the Earth itself. It's very much in the style of Wilson's classic videos for Tame Impala and Royal Blood. This maximalist vision takes Mabel's longstanding inclination to playfulness to the next level. It has something to say, anchored by confident performances by the artists - and Wilson's top-notch direction. [imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

David Wilson directs a stunning 'monster film' for MASSTOR's Self Control, a cover of Raf’s 1984 hit. After spending his free time experimenting with Midjourney in September of 2022 - and creating @RetroFuturistDaddies, a gorgeously curated feed of AI-generated moustachioed men as a result of it - David Wilson caught the eye of LA-based artist MASSTOR, who enlisted his help in creating this tour de force amalgam of performance, character design and queer muscle aesthetic. [imgtoken data:1]Blending high-fashion nostalgia, retrofuturistic imagery and moments of pure fantasy, we see the artist hanging out in a bar, surrounded by muscle men and fellow plush creatures, having a whale of a time. It's camp, eclectic and completely engrossing, and explores areas of queer iconography that spoke directly to Wilson’s passions, having carved his name as an ever-growing presence in the queer filmmaking community. From costume design through to art direction and cinematography, it's a polished visual that retains a certain dancefloor grit and sex appeal, and there's one thing that can be almost guaranteed - you won't see another music video like it today![imgtoken data:2]

David Wilson explores the breakdown of a nuclear family in his oddball promo for Glass Animals' Tangerine. Taking place on a surreal car journey - with vocalist Dave Bayley playing a Mother, Father and child at various ages - the story follows a typical modern day life-cycle... Boy meets girl, they have a kid, get annoyed with each other and end up splitting, just for the process to repeat when the kid reaches adolescence. The poignant message is wrapped in a layer of quirky imagery, with subtle visual effects allowing the three characters in tandem. The execution is top-notch, and a clever way to get around social distancing and the various challenges that have carried over from the year so far.[imgtoken data:1]

If you need something uplifting right now, look no further. Paloma Faith and director David Wilson lament the gentrification of London in brilliantly feisty fashion, in the wonderful promo for Gold. Decked out in a trademark whimsical dress and radiating heaps of energy, Paloma skips and dances down an East London market and into a building site, dangling from an excavator, kicking down doors, and just having a riotous time with some of her fellow, equally colourful residents. Paloma is magnetic as always, the supporting cast - all dancers in the Theo Adams Company - are great too, and DoP David Foulkes matches her energy in sweeping crane shots and fluid camera movement. Ever since his marvellous video for Metronomy's The Bay, David Wilson has been able to make magic happen by the pool. And that's what happens in his video for Glass Animals' It's All So Incredibly Loud.GA's frontman Dave Bayley emerges through wisps of smoke to negotiate the diving board of a swimming pool in a suburban home at night. Yes, once again Wilson is making an English summer appear impossibly glamourous. He also brings us a heightened reality which almost seems nostalgic in its visual crispness. The intention is to capture a moment, and explore it's metaphorical meaning. Shot on both a Phantom and an Alexa, the time when Bayley inevitably enters the pool's water is stretched out to last as long as possible. Time is slowed, just as seems to happen when you dive into cold water - and also when you are faced with the emotional issues discussed in the song.Suitably Bayley also delivers a heartfelt performance to camera in this video that marks a triumphant return by David Wilson to the music video mainstream. A nod too to marvellous camerawork, supervised by DoP David Foulkes. [imgtoken data:1]

He's done animation and he's done live action. He's even combined the two. But now David Wilson joins up with animator Christy Karacas (of Superjail! fame) to mix-and-mash the two media in an outstandingly effective and upfront way for Royal Blood's Out Of The Black. It's simply the best way to tell this full-throttle super-violent comedy action-horror - involving a gas station heist by psychotic alien inside a giant Easter bunny suit - and his buddies: a snowman, pumpkin, ice cream cone and walking heart. After the animated TV titles intro, the live action centring around a Doofus-like clerk sets the scene, before Karacas's extravagantly gory alien-revealing animation takes over... “I became a fan of Christy’s show Superjail! a few years ago," says David. "It was Christy’s incredibly inventive fight sequences and love of hand drawn animation that made me obsess over his work. I love hand drawn animation. It’s where my directing career began, and I still fill my free time over a light box, drawing away.“I wanted to give Christy as much creative freedom as possible whilst making sure the animation and the live action would still sync together. I would give Christy the starting point of which characters were fighting, where their geographical placing was on the set, and which characters would die. It was then up to Christy to create fight sequence, knowing the in-and-out points.”Post-production was carried out at Finish, who provided the colour grade and extensive visual effects work to knit the promo together. "“One of our key jobs was to create several big matte paintings, the main one being the backdrop for a scene where the service station employee confronts the aliens in costumes," explains Flame artist Judy Roberts. "A smashed up helicopter, cars and a dead body, were all added to the clean plate using hand textured CGI renders, and various supplied photographic elements.Colourist Julien Biard adds: “David is based in LA and he couldn’t be in the grading suite with me so we used a remote grading system, where I’m grading in London and David is at another facility in LA. It’s great because both suites are linked up by an almost instantaneous feed so he could see every adjustment of the grade in real time."“They worked tirelessly to elevate the piece," says David of FInish's input. "Like with the majority of Post Production this is done in ways that are often very difficult to spot, but that’s only because they did an incredible job. The result lived up to my dreams. I dreamed BIG on this one!”

Royal Blood 'Out Of The Black' by David Wilson & Christy Karacas

Royal Blood - Out Of The Black (Official Video)

David Wilson delivers a righteous, ultimately joyous accompaniment to a classic Arcade Fire cri de ceour We Exist, thanks to a gripping performance by Andrew Garfield, showing that he is a more courageous actor than the Amazing Spider-Man allows. In fact, this also involves a change of garb, but a more profound transformation. The Garfield character's need to express himself as a woman leads him to a bar where he puts himself at the mercy of the local rednecks. But the predictable outcome of victimisation and violence - with echoes of Boys Don't Cry, the film about the murder of transgender teenager Brandon Teena – gets turned on its head.Drama becomes fantasy, as Garfield's aggressors become dancers - this is the second collaboration in quick succession, between David Wilson and choreographer Ryan Heffington who (as well as working on the Sia Chandelier video) choreographed David's superb video for Hercules & Love Affair's I Try To Talk To You.And then comes the brilliant payoff. Garfield is led by his dancer guardian angels through a portal into the real world: Coachella 2014, and Arcade Fire are playing We Exist. A moved (or quite possibly terrified) Garfield joins the band on stage. What a moment.

Dreams come true in David Wilson’s video for Tame Impala’s Mind Mischief: a schoolboy is lost in erotic yearnings for his sexy young lady teacher in a 1970s English boys school. Passion-Pit-'Take-A-Walk'-by-David-Wilson

David Wilson's remarkable development in the past year from his animation roots continues with a full-on action adventure for David Guetta's emotional Titanium, sung by Sia. It's a blockbuster narrative of an apparently ordinary boy (played by Super 8's Ryan Lee) who goes on the run after accidentally exposing his destructive supernatural powers while at school.
David W says that when given an open brief - Guetta wanted a narrative, and didn't want to be in it - he originally took a humourous approach to the script, but then changed it completely to have a superhero boy in a real world. Shot in cold, small town Canada, its less about superhero derring-do than teen alienation - with nods to movies like Let The Right One In and Elephant.

In the video for illustrator and musician Keaton Henson's fragile lament Charon, a puppet character slides towards a final release by his own hand - not the happiest of subjects, in all honesty, but invested with wonder and no little creativity - as you'd expect from David Wilson, working here with John Malcolm Moore and Keaton Henson himself.
Having worked with Keaton on the promo for the Japanese Popstars' Let Go, David was invited to join Keaton and John to help to develop a concept the pair had conceived for Charon. Keaton's work as a designer and illustrator was the jumping-off point for the film, the style and tone evolving from his dual creative impulses in music and art. "We wanted to reflect the darkness of the album and give the songs a face without a video of me feeling sorry for myself, so it felt right to have a puppet as representation of me instead."
So the brilliant puppetmaster Jonny Sabbagh created the heartbroken character who ends up ending it all in a variety of ways, the filming taking place over two days, with a very cold Richmond Park providing the exterior woodland shots and interiors captured in a rather colourful hotel in central London.
"Jonny did a fantastic job," says David. "I spent an intensive afternoon working on the performance with John, who assumed puppetry duties on the shoot. We managed to construct a journey that the puppet would go through in his mind over the course of the track, so that every expression was the result of his internal thought process rather than a response to the lyrics - just like how actors work."

David Wilson takes on one of the biggest stories of them all, and reworks it in remarkable fashion for dubstep pioneer Skream.
The remarkable claymation effects were created using a rarely-seen technique called strata-cut, in collaboration with illustrator/animator Joseph Mann - a technique that is fully revealed in David's engaging and informative 'making of the video' film (if you've seen David's previous making ofs you'll know what to expect).

David's second video for Little Boots, following the hugely successful Remedy, centres around Boots communing with the cosmos, and features Hubble-quality scenes of awesome galactic activity created by Flame artist Judy Roberts and After Effects whizz Christopher Bristow at Munky.
And it also features another ingenious Wilson-developed technique that creates the impression that water droplets are levitating and hovering in mid-air. It was achieved by synchronizing the framerate of the camera to that of dripping stream of water. Each droplet is unique, but has been captured with such precision that it gives the impression of a single droplets being held mid-flight.
As with his MVA-winning promo for Moray McLaren's We Got Time, the effect wasn't created through stop-motion animation techniques, or through computer trickery, but was matched live on set with a camera turning over at 12 frames per second in order to allow the artist to lip-sync and interact with the water in real time.

Little Boots’ Earthquake by David Wilson

After his outstanding videos for Moray McLaren and We Have Band, David Wilson continues his stunning introduction to music videos with a proper biggie for Little Boots. And David once more applies his mirror-based ingenuity, for more visual wonderment, this time on a kaleidoscopic theme.

Little Boots’ Remedy by David Wilson

Hot on the heels of his marvellous and ingenious Praxinoscope-inspired video for Moray McLaren's We Got Time, David Wilson has come up with another awe-inspiring and seriously unlikely animated video, this time for London outfit We Have Band.
You Came Out, created in collaboration with Weiden & Kennedy creatives Fabian Berglund and Ida Gronblom, who conceived the original idea, is a new take on the performance video. The three members of the band are always in shot, but more or less doing nothing - it's the facepaint they're wearing that's moving, telling the story of a night of debauchery and excess.
It took three days and over 6,000 frames of footage for David to animate his beautiful facepaint designs on the band, relying on their infinite, good-natured patience - they basically had to lie still for three days. Plus he had the help of highly regarded mother-and-daughter animation team Joanna and Katie Anne Harrison. Joanna learned her trade on such classics as The Snowman and When The Wind Blows, while Katie is an up-and-coming star of the design and illustration world.
Like his Moray vid, it's dazzling, it's mesmerizing, and you've really got to wonder how the hell he does this stuff - but it definitely involves mirrors. What is he going to come up with next

We Have Band’s You Came Out by David Wilson

Stunning, ingenious video for Moray McLaren by David Wilson, an animator who appears to have a planet-sized brain. It's all based on the pre-cinematic device called the Praxinoscope, uses 14 mirrored carousels and 114 individually illustrated record labels placed on a group of ordinary record turntables. And what looks utterly impossible is actually true: it was all achieved in-camera - largely by changing the frame-rates.David, who recently signed to Blink Ink and Colonel Blimp, explains all with great clarity in his fascinating Making of (see below), revealing that an important element was to demonstrate how hypnotic this animation technique is to watch in real time, and translate that to the viewer through the video. Job brilliantly done.Making of:http://www.youtube.com/watchv=d4LSg7f4lFs&fmt=18
