Martha Goddard is challenged by her malevolent alter-ego&nbsp;- a physical manifestation of the intrusive thoughts in her head - in&nbsp;Tom Patrick Coley's dramatic fantasy for the singer-songwriter's song Voices.During Martha's walk in the forest, her döppelgänger appears, dressed in scarlet, attempting to take control of her&nbsp;mind by changing her brain chemistry. Alongside the narrative, there's also a liquid light show, an organic graphic element that illustrates the singer's constantly changing emotional state and projected onto her face in real time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Tom Patrick Coley says: "In this surreal piece, I wanted to depict the mental fragility many of us experience, and how simple chemistry within us can influence our lives. This is more relevant than ever, especially in the fast-paced modern world we all live in. Having recently announced the filmmakers selected to make films on the subject of 'Disinfo' - this year's&nbsp;brief - Yarns has now revealed the experienced professionals&nbsp;who will mentor the filmmakers during the process of making their films.The mentors are director&nbsp;Georgi Banks-Davies, writer-director Luke Brookner and writer, director and producer Katie Lambert. From perfecting scripts to navigating post-production, the mentors have each been assigned a project, to challenge, champion&nbsp;and elevate the shorts being developed for this year’s timely and provocative brief - set by Homespun, the rising talent&nbsp;division of Stitch Editing.&nbsp;Georgi Banks-Davies is a BAFTA winning director. Her TV debut was as lead director on&nbsp;I Hate Suzie&nbsp;written by Lucy Prebble, and starring Billie Piper. She was the lead director on the sci-fi adaptation&nbsp;Paper Girls&nbsp;for Amazon, and Greek God opus&nbsp;Kaos&nbsp;for Netflix. She is currently in post production on the&nbsp;The Night Manager 2&nbsp;for BBC/Amazon, of which she directed the whole series. She has also directed many festival-screened shorts, most notably&nbsp;Garfield,&nbsp;selected for the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Georgi is also a successful commercials director - represented by Rogue Films. She joins Yarns to mentor duo Ciara O’Rourke and Jack Clarke, bringing her experience in both realism and speculative fiction to their end-of-the-world fable&nbsp;Don’t Believe A Word I Say.“Yarns is one of the most exciting film competitions out there, throwing a light on new voices and talent, and giving them the platform to shine," she says.&nbsp;"It goes without saying I'm proper chuffed to be a part of the scheme, supporting a brilliant filmmaker to achieve their vision. As a director, Luke searches for the intimacy and honesty in the small moments and often showcases a sensitivity and rawness, achieved by his obsession to capture a sense of naturalism in whatever he makes. He’ll be bringing his sharp eye for performance and comedy while mentoring Tom Tennant for his fishy rom-com&nbsp;Angling For Love.Katie Lambert is half of MrMr films and loves a good time. As a writer and director, her interests lie in exploring female trouble and referencing every Lady Gaga music video ever made. With MrMr she has produced award-winning work globally, including that time she tried to sneak onto Usher’s private jet (denied). Short film competition Yarns has revealed the unsigned filmmakers selected to bring their visions to life under the competition's bold theme this year.The&nbsp;finalists are the director/producer duo Ciara O'Rourke &amp; Jack Clarke, Tom Tennant and&nbsp;Naomi Pallas, who have been selected to make films on the subject of DISINFO.&nbsp;The not-for-profit competition organised by Homespun -&nbsp;the new talent division of Stitch Editing -&nbsp;that champions emerging UK talent with full creative and post-production support to transform their ideas into fully realised short films, received a record number of submissions for films tackling this year's theme. The three finalists were then chosen from a shortlist of ten submissions.Each finalist will receive £2,000 funding and post-production assistance from Homespun, and post partners Sine Audio Post, Absolute, Freefolk and Nineteentwenty. The competition is also backed by&nbsp;Kodak, APA&nbsp;and Sine Audio Post.Ciara O’Rourke &amp; Jack Clarke will bring their twist on the end of the world to their short&nbsp;Don’t Believe A Word I Say. O'Rourke is a director and award-winning production designer from Doncaster, known for her surreal, stylistic and heartfelt visual storytelling. A BAFTA mentee with a growing reputation, she excels in finding magic in the rubble.&nbsp;Clarke is a Salford-based producer whose work spans indie features, investigative docs and grassroots culture. His work spotlights the grit, grief and brilliance of everyday lives.Tom Tennant's comedy short&nbsp;Angling For Love&nbsp;will explore the fishier sides of modern dating. He is a&nbsp;Somerset-born up and coming filmmaker whose wit is as sharp as his eye. Often working with his brother Theo, his previous documentary&nbsp;Frontier Town won a BAFTA Cymru Award.&nbsp;Naomi Pallas's documentary How To Sell A Girl will dive into a dark new online phenomenon.&nbsp;She is a documentary producer and director from Essex whose freelance work spans BBC, Channel 4, Sky and Amazon — but she’s just as passionate about her independent explorations of technology, folklore and the natural world. I go to a lot of gigs, but there have been two standouts this year. Firstly,&nbsp;the Japanese avant-garde-metal-rock-jazz band called Sigh in Hackney recently. It was such surprisingly wholesome fun, they even had their little kids singing backing vocals on stage with them.Another incredible gig was getting to see one of my fave Dublin artists Lankum perform their full album False Lankum with some Irish friends. A reviewer has described their performances as being more of an exorcism than a gig and that is a better description than I can think of. They build such an overwhelming wall of sound layered and layered onto itself, it’s just extraordinary live.[imgtoken data:1]Name a film or video or other creative work that had a huge influence on your career choice?Music videos will always have such a special place in my heart. I was obsessed with them as a kid and I’d spend hours and hours obsessively watching MTV in my Nan’s house.Those late 90s and early 2000s videos are still so iconic. The cinematography, the sets, the choreo, the edits are just insane. Missy Elliot, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Yeah&nbsp;Yeah&nbsp;Yeahs, Ludacris, Outkast, Lady Gaga... just so good!![vidtoken data:1]I also got really into Kpop/Jpop videos. They have such interesting imagery and still have a lot of that similar hyperpop 2000s energy to them. Artists like Super Junior, Girls Generation were amazing, and those early BlackPink videos always had crazy good editing/cinematography/choreo.And now with artists like Lisa, Babymonster, Jesse, Chanmina and Le Sserafim, who are still consistently releasing such fun, conceptual and technically stunning videos.&nbsp;&nbsp;In terms of the music video-related jobs of the past year or so, what were the most rewarding creatively, and why?I adored working on Andrex - Do You Really Like It? directed by Chloe Victoria Hughes. It is such a fun concept, mixing the commercial with music video (and the Pied Piper remix is hilarious). It was such a creatively fun job to be a part of. Chloe always has such a strong vision on all of her projects. The edits on her job are always such a delight, and she is such a powerhouse, that she makes everything - even toilet jokes - look stunning.[vidtoken data:2]Equally, I had a wonderful time working on Ella Eyre's Ain’t No Love That&nbsp;Blind directed by Dora Paphides. Tom Patrick Coley helms an intense comedy-horror&nbsp;for London-based Texan songwriter Anna Roenigk - aka Born Again Virgin - set at an awards ceremony for a salespeople of a pyramid scheme&nbsp;in the mid-Nineties, where things take a dark turn indeed.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the video for Bird of Prey,&nbsp;Roenigk plays a charismatic yet obnoxious host, presenting the awards to a pool of overenthusiastic salespeople. Daniel Fletcher combines realism with some aspirational fantasy for MWS, as the West London rapper dreams of greater success and fame, and starts appearing on posters, billboards and vinyl covers, performing Fingertips.&nbsp;The video starts with MWS at home in his high-rise, having a smoke, before the&nbsp;familiarity is disturbed by a surprising occurance: MWS&nbsp;in&nbsp;the posters on the wall, performing the song.&nbsp;As he steps outside, the trick is repeated as billboard and banners around London come to life.&nbsp;And wherever he goes a 2001-style rectangle of light is close by.[imgtoken data:1]With a subtle dose of VFX and experimental narrative elements, the video takes viewers on an enjoyable trippy adventure from scene to scene, paying homage to his humble West London roots.&nbsp;The gritty, naturalistic textures contrast with the surreal 'portals' and VFX elements, signifying both the journey to get where he is and the one that lies ahead.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]

Master Peace goes to the dogs,&nbsp;in&nbsp;Freddie Cattaneo's entertaining promo for&nbsp;I Might Be Fake.He's a fish out of water, and possibly getting lured onto someone else's hook, when Master Peace joins old school working class Londoners at their leisure, at a greyhound race meeting, in scenes reminiscent of those&nbsp;Guy Ritchie movies.&nbsp;"I Might Be Fake is about pretending to be something that you’re not," says Cattaneo.&nbsp;"As such I wanted to place Master Peace in an unfamiliar world which he can only navigate by using deceit."The infamous, controversial world of greyhound racing seemed fitting as it’s associated with white, working class Britain and also offered the prospect of Master Peace being tipped off on fixed races. In addition, the track has a hyper, manic energy which I felt would be aptly personified in scampering liveliness of the greyhounds and the volatile nature of betting itself.[imgtoken data:1]"To create comic irony, I decided to juxtapose Master Peace’s braggadocious attitude in I Might Be Fake&nbsp;with a narrative where, despite expecting the opposite, everything goes awry."Early Guy Ritchie films, Lock Stock &amp; Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, were referenced in terms of how to build a world in the underbelly of British society with a comic, heightened tone."

Yarns has announced that film critic James King will be returning to host this year’s screening of the four films made by this year's Yarns finalists, on 16th November at Prince Charles Cinema, in London's West End.King is a writer, broadcaster and one of the UK’s best-known film critics, appearing&nbsp;regularly on television and radio programmes. He is BBC Radio 2’s resident movie critic on the Jo Whiley Show and has his own BBC Radio 2 series My Soundtrack Stories -&nbsp;where he has interviewed renowned directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan. He is returning as presenter of this year's Yarns screening at tthe Prince Charles, for the second year running.The screening will also see a performance by one of the UK’s leading spoken word poets, Miss Yankey. James King returns as host for this year's Yarns screening on November 16th 

The four mentors who will guide the finalists for this year's <a href="https://yarnsfilm.co.uk/" target="_blank">Yarns</a> - Stitch and Homespun's prestigious annual short film competition - have been announced.The mentors are Meji Alabi, director at RSA/Black Dog Films; Marta&nbsp;Bobic, executive producer and MD at CANADA London; Ninian Doff, director at Pulse Films; and Keith McCarthy, director at Stink Films. Mentors unveiled for finalists of this year's Yarns competition 

Denisha Anderson teams up with Purple Disco Machine, Duke Dumont and Nothing But Thieves for cinematic collab Something On My Mind, to create a Pulp Fiction-like narrative within an intriguing time loop structure.&nbsp;For the video, Anderson was inspired by Maya Deren's Meshes Of The Afternoon,&nbsp;and wanted to create a fantasy romance, using a time loop pattern of confusion and lust.&nbsp;With each loop, the storyline unfolds as the&nbsp;lead protagonists go on a&nbsp;whirlwind trip joyriding in a Porsche&nbsp;and robbing diners.[imgtoken data:1]It's a big and very successful leap into bigger concepts for Denisha Anderson, who navigates a hybrid narrative / performance promo with flair, cleverly interweaving the storyline with enigmatic shots of the artists - Tino Piontek aka Purple Disco Machine, and Noting But Thieves&nbsp;tied up in a basement.&nbsp;"It couldn’t have&nbsp;gone any better, despite it being the first time I had no contact with the artists prior to filming," explains Anderson."Day 1 was a remote shoot with our team filming Purple Disco Machine in Berlin. He was an absolute gent to work with whilst being tied up and placed in the back of a boot with myself and my DOP directing him via a laptop from London.&nbsp;"On Day 2 we shot Nothing but Thieves in person, and again it was such a pleasurable experience. The whole band had&nbsp;great energy and Connor (the lead singer) was up for anything and everything I threw at him.[imgtoken data:2]"For this narrative video, I got for the first time to choose professional actors which was a luxury for me.&nbsp;I needed people who were confident, comfortable and convincing for the roles I had written. I had an amazing casting director who managed to get around 130 to audition for our lead roles; it was a long day of tape watching, but to our joy we knew we had found our protagonists in Bonina and Seamus. And after our rehearsal day, I felt excited and confident that they were going to deliver and they went above and beyond."As a director you have memorable moments on set and for this one it was the end of Day 2 which was Hot Rod Diner.&nbsp;I know it sounds cheesy but I thought to myself:&nbsp;'Sh*t the bed I’m really living my dreams'.”

<h3>We caught up with director Milo Blake about his first ever rock video, and with producer Mayling Wong, about her first project&nbsp;since joining&nbsp;Spindle as EP.</h3>The video for Royal Blood's Mountains At Midnight was the first from the fourth album from the Brighton duo who have now been one of the UK's top rock bands for the best part of a decade. It was also director Milo Blake's first foray into a new music genre, after his work in everything from grime to pop to banging techno. So far, electric guitars and drum kits have been conspicuously absent from the&nbsp;&nbsp;As it turns out Blake (above, during the Mountains At Midnight video shoot) delivers&nbsp;a visceral&nbsp;grittiness in the video - which includes an intense performance by the band under relentless strobe lights in a small&nbsp;music club. But its main focus is largely upon the audience - and one audience member in particular, who even within a heaving crowd is lost in her own world. A palpable sense of euphoria is expressed through the cut, by Rich Woolway, which switching between the conventional band and crowd scenario to her being completely alone in the space.It was also the first time that Blake and Wong had worked together since her arrival as EP for Music Videos, Commercials and Special Projects. So we started our conversation in traditional fashion, by asking them how the idea came about in the first place, and was developed through the treatment stage.&nbsp;&nbsp;[vidtoken data:0]&nbsp;<blockquote>Royal Blood's videos have had a particular stylistic universe. I felt like tonally it was something that matched up with elements of my own work.&nbsp;&nbsp;</blockquote>PROMONEWS: Old school heavy rock seems like a departure from the artists and music you’ve worked with before, Milo. So what appealed about working with Royal Blood?&nbsp;&nbsp; MILO BLAKE: I think in some sense the very reason that it was a departure appealed to me. I was intrigued by the experience of working with a new genre and style of artist.Also Royal Blood have had a particular stylistic universe which their videos have existed in over the years. I felt like tonally it was something that matched up with elements of my own work, with their world being something that I could contribute to and develop.&nbsp;Where did the idea of focussing on a single audience member of a gig come from and how did it develop? And do you know if anything like it has been done before?&nbsp;MB: I guess because those who go to a gig uniquely will have an experience which is entirely personal to them, but simultaneously it will be one fragment which is connected to a much larger picture.I feel that gigs and communal events like this hold special spaces in our memory. Human expression and release reaches a special pitch when we gather and dance together. It was this particular&nbsp;euphoria which I wanted to hone in on and play with. That led to us creating this game in the concept of her experience and actions being mirrored across the same space: one full, one empty.To be totally honest, I don't know if it's been done before. It may have, but maybe not like this. The original visual idea came from a small clip I had seen on Instagram where a boxer had been painted out of a clip of a fight but you still saw all his corresponding impacts on his opponent. That gave me the idea to explore how this illusion could be transported into a different setting with a different intention.[imgtoken data:1]<blockquote>Emma is incredible in her look and the way she evokes emotion with&nbsp;her movement.</blockquote>How did you contribute at the treatment stage, Mayling, in terms of suggestions and advice?MAYLING WONG:&nbsp;Working with Milo on this one was such a nice, collaborative process. I provided production support along the way as timings were tight, so we wanted to make sure we pitched what was feasible. But in terms of the magic and imagination, Milo sent me his idea (albeit after a few curveballs) and I was blown away! &nbsp;What were your visual references for establishing the look and feel of the video? Was this always a ‘black and white’ video, in your mind?&nbsp; &nbsp; MB: Black and white always felt distinctly appropriate from the beginning. Something about the sound power of the instrumental coupled with the reality that its largely only two different instruments creating this: bass guitar and drums.The style of black and white evolved later in the process - particularly in the grade with Thom Mangham [at Black Kite Studios] we looked to emulate the contrasts and quality of image you see in the work of Australian stills photographer&nbsp;Trent Parke. He was someone who we were frequently referring&nbsp;back to.&nbsp;How did you cast your lead, Emma Belabed?MB: Myself, Emma and our choreographer Magnus Westwell all worked previously on a video for the electronic artist, PRXZ. Magnus and Emma frequently work with each other and they make a great team!Emma is incredible in her look and the way she evokes emotion with&nbsp;her movement. Plus her work ethic is second to none -and I'm always demanding pretty high intensity performances from her.[imgtoken data:2]Above: choreographer Magnus Westwell puts actor Emma Belabed through her paces during rehearsal for the video shootSo can you reveal: is she watching the band from the crowd and imagining she’s on her own - or is she on her own, imagining she’s watching the band?&nbsp;&nbsp;MB: For me it's both. At different points throughout her journey in the video, I think it leans more one way then alternately at other points I think it's more the latter. That's what can be interesting about memory or imagination. It's vivid but still slippery, it affirms certain details and shrouds or misguides others.Were there any major obstacles that you encountered in pre-production that impacted on the shoot/execution of the idea?MW: Time!! This was the most difficult part of the project. We had sign off on Tuesday and shot the following Thursday with a Bank Holiday nicely sandwiched in-between.But the saving grace on this one was the incredible team we had onboard – this made all the difference. And then matched with the endless support of Spindle and the label – it really was a great project![imgtoken data:3]<blockquote>The ceiling started leaking water from the rain outside onto our artists and our power sources.</blockquote>Where did you shoot the video and what were the biggest challenges on the shoot day?&nbsp;&nbsp; MB: We shot in an old warehouse in Bermondsey. The space needed to feel like it had a sort of underground atmosphere to it and have textural features which matched the grunginess of the song.The challenges I suppose were to try and make it feel as full as we could. We had a pretty large cast by conventional standards -&nbsp;40-plus dancers. But even that required to think more carefully about composition, what would be the appropriate&nbsp;shooting style and how best to maximise the energy of this group over the course of a 12 hour day. They all did a fantastic job.Another unexpected challenge which I haven't had before was half-way through a take the ceiling started leaking water from the rain outside onto our artists and our power sources! But we rose from that minor hiccup, it bonded us closer as a set to still getting the things we needed.MW:&nbsp;in hindsight Milo’s probably right that the leaking ceiling was a hiccup.&nbsp;But in the moment I was on the STRESS EXPRESS! Water was pouring into the location and my health and safety brain was all over the place! But the location managed it really well and we gave it a temporary fix![imgtoken data:4]It’s an intense, old school fast-cutting edit from Rich Woolway at Stitch/Homespun. Presumably that was always intended, but did he add anything else to the existing plan for the video?&nbsp; MB: Rich is a wizard! Yes it was always the plan. I had established a timeline of where I wanted certain beats of the video to take place and how long they should last. Rich edited to this, but then offered up so many lovely unexpected sequence flourishes which took it to the next level.Plus with so many moving light elements and shadow, Rich had to possess the steely vision to see where the mathcuts in movement between the two worlds could emerge from. Some were planned and other's he sifted through and offered up himself.&nbsp;How much VFX is in the video?&nbsp; MB: In reality not a great deal. A lot of the VFX was removing the wires that were attached to Emma and controlled by our choreographers out of shot which were used to create these invisible impacts of movement where she's being jostled and pulled by the crowd around her. In the end it was a combination of this process and then Emma having the control of her body to simulate these impacts alone also.Are you inspired to make more explosive rock videos?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; MB: As you might have guessed, I don't like to be pinned down to one style of work. So I'm inspired to keep making hopefully explosive and thought-provoking work in any genre! As long as I'm connected and captivated in some form to the project, my next three videos could be funk, folk, soul or classical. Plenty of things to explore!&nbsp; &nbsp; And how would you describe your first experience of working together?&nbsp;MW:&nbsp;Chaotic fun! With a sprinkling of agility. It was a really enjoyable experience and a great one to kick start mine and Milo’s newfound working relationship! I think he’s incredibly talented and I cannot wait for the next one!MB: Mayling was instrumental in the success of the video. There's nothing like making a film together to super-charge a new collaboration and relationship, which this job did exactly! Her attention to detail, creative problem-solving and management&nbsp;of clients, so that I could do what I needed to achieve, all came to the fore throughout the making of this. A bored fish and chip worker loves to dance, in this life-affirming video for Katie Melua by MrMr.&nbsp;Melua's song Quiet Moves is about immigration and culture; how growing up in the UK impacts on those who were come from other countries - as Melua herself did - and how these people retain their cultural heritage, often 'quietly'. The video&nbsp;reflects that message through the lead character. He&nbsp;has the most English of jobs - working in a fish &amp; chip shop. But he wants to dance... when no-one is watching.Only it turns out that someone is watching: a little girl who becomes his fascinated spectator and then his dance-partner, when he takes his dance to the streets around the fish and chip shop.&nbsp;MrMr - aka Katie Lambert and Martha&nbsp;McGuirk - give the video a charming simplicity and lightness of touch that suits the&nbsp;characteristic gentle delivery of Katie Melua - who cameos as one of the fish &amp; chip shop customers. Pip + Lib direct a heartwrenching promo for&nbsp;JGrrey, featuring Kojey Radical.The track&nbsp;is a tribute to the artist's&nbsp;best friend&nbsp;James, who sadly lost his battle with depression, and marks the first collaboration between JGrrey and Kojey Radical, having known each other for a decade.&nbsp;The video for May depicts a support group which descends into chaos and violence, via an outpour&nbsp;of complex emotions and the fear of being truthful with oneself.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;"From the moment we received our first voicenote from Jen [JGrrey], we knew this was gonna be a special project," say Pip + Lib. Trust is one thing all directors, creatives, and basically everyone wants when working on something, and we were so thankful to have that&nbsp;in mountain loads."The respect for our ideas and new paths was rare and beautiful.
