Alice Fassi tells us about the work that defines her and reveals her maxim for bigger and&nbsp;bolder creativity.&nbsp;Name: Alice FassiBirthday: 25.09.94Where did you grow up? In Milano (unfortunately).&nbsp;Place of further education and course (if any)? SAE Institute in “Filmmaking” course.&nbsp;Where do you live now? In Milano. Trying to move to Paris again.&nbsp;Name a film or video or other creative work that had a huge influence on your career choice?<a href="https://letterboxd.com/film/who-framed-roger-rabbit/" target="_blank">Who Framed Roger Rabbit</a>, for sure. I’ve watched it so many times since I was a kid, and it still surprises me every time. It’s just so impressive what they pulled off. That mix of animation and live action felt kind of magical to me, and I think it really shaped the way I see storytelling - the mix of 'grounded'&nbsp;and absurd.[vidtoken data:0]<blockquote>It really shaped the way I see storytelling - the mix of 'grounded'&nbsp;and absurd.</blockquote>What were the important first projects for you, in terms of a learning experience and getting noticed, or a foothold in the industry?I would say my music videos were definitely a turning point, especially <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2024/10/21/cults-onions-alice-fassi/88633" target="_blank">Onions, by Cults</a>. They wanted something with a horror-humour tone, inspired by Beetlejuice, which was exactly what I was looking for. It was the first project where I truly felt I could express myself 100%.[vidtoken data:1]Then my commercial for Salomon, which I shot last year in Georgia, was another key experience. It was a very fun project and allowed me to merge my love for fashion with a slightly more absurd, unexpected twist, which is something that really defines my work.[vidtoken data:2]And finally, my film for Vogue in collaboration with Maserati. One of my very first projects. It gave me the opportunity to express myself with choreography, entirely shot on 16mm film.[vidtoken data:3]Best film(s) you saw last year?I’ll stick to films that were actually released last year, otherwise the list would get way too long! So again let’s focusing on contemporary music: LCD Soundsystem, Sleaford Mods, La Femme, Fontaines DC, Future Islands. They feel like really fun characters to build a video around, and you can tell there’s a lot of creative collaboration there.What was (or usually is) your favourite night out last year?Oh, I had so many. I’d say all the nights where I actually experienced something, not just going out for the sake of leaving the house. In the US last summer, it all felt quite folkloristic. I felt like I was living inside of a movie.&nbsp;In terms of the music video-related jobs of the past year or so, what were the most rewarding creatively, and why?Last year I only shot one music video. It was for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2025/06/03/joy-crookes-carmen-alice-fassi/91219" target="_blank">Joy Crookes’s track Carmen</a>. Joy is such an amazing character and we were very aligned creatively, so the process felt smooth. It’s just a shame we couldn’t shoot everything we had planned, or fully realize the vision the way I had imagined it.[vidtoken data:4]Most annoying or irksome thing that’s been going on this year, work-related or otherwise?I feel like directors should be protected more. Sometimes we pitch against more than five other directors without even knowing it. Writing a treatment is a lot of unpaid work, and it’s frustrating to see that effort not being properly recognized.What are your favourite other (non-mv) projects of the past year or so?I would say my commercial for Salomon, which I mentioned earlier. Then Born To Create Drama,&nbsp;a short narrative film. That project was particularly exciting because we shot it in just one day, entirely on an iPhone, with a kid actor at his very first experience, and there was something really raw and honest about that. The film opened the YDA winners screening in Cannes last year which makes what we achieved feel even more surreal.[vidtoken data:5]And finally The Testimonial, a short film I directed for the 150th anniversary of Audemars Piguet, starring Pierfrancesco Favino. That experience was the complete opposite from the previous,&nbsp;in a way. It gave me the chance to work with a highly experienced actor, and to really explore how much you can play and even improvise when you’re collaborating with someone who has such mastery of their craft.[vidtoken data:6]What’s the most surprising thing that’s happened last year?Work-wise I would say winning the UKMVA with my music video Onions&nbsp;for Cults! I was so surprised I hadn’t even prepared a short 'thank you'&nbsp;speech.Your top suggestion to change and improve how the music video industry works?I would try to make the process more fluid. Everything always feels urgent, even before things properly begin. Alice Fassi brings a delightful comedic sensibility - both absurd and touching - to Joy Crooke’s latest, a song that dares to tackle a thorny subject: the effect of feminine beauty on other women.The subject of the song and video is the beautiful, apparently vacuous Carmen - spied upon by an awestruck Joy, disguised as a bush. Carmen (played by Amelia Swaby) is literally heading for a fall. She’s even looking gorgeous in mid-plummet - but then comes her surprising, brilliantly delivered fate: the mannequin-like Carmen shatters into pieces.[imgtoken data:1]The Italian director’s cartoonish approach is a real departure from previous Joy Crookes videos but entirely welcome, primarily as the wacky invention also shares the warmth of the song. She also makes the most of Joy as a performer in the second half of the video, when friendship blossoms with Swaby - by this point playing Carmen’s disembodied head in a box."When I listened to the track, I felt I knew this 'Carmen'," says Alice Fassi. "Carmen actually is the girl we’ve all known at some point: effortlessly perfect, admired to the point of obsession, and quietly envied for having everything we ever wanted – all without lifting a finger."Sometimes it takes almost nothing: a casual comparison, a sprinkle of envy dressed up as admiration, and suddenly we’re bowing down to someone who only exists in our head. Not the real person, of course, but a high-gloss, limited-edition fantasy — prettier, cooler, simply better. And from there, it’s a slippery slope straight into obsession.[imgtoken data:2]&nbsp;"For our music video, the scene of Carmen falling down the stairs is the perfect embodiment of this feeling. Even in her most dramatic downfall, she manages to be… perfect. And though she shatters into a thousand pieces, her influence doesn’t – it simply shifts. Royal Blood's fearsome&nbsp;performance becomes the eye of a human storm in&nbsp;Quentin Deronzier's brilliantly stylish video for Tyhoons.&nbsp;&nbsp;There's a sense of calm in the air as the video begins, before things start to happen. Then as the band kick off on a London rooftop, a group of young people wearing black start running, Why? Where are they&nbsp;heading?&nbsp;As their number grows, and their speed, it becomes clear the young people are sprinting towards that rooftop where RB are performaning. And they get there, to circle them and create an amazing phenomenon - a human typhoon.Deronzier squeezes the maximum visual impact from this strong central concept. The edit weaves the band's performance and the mass movement of youth into a thrilling experience;&nbsp;and the VFX are excellent, manipulating the overcast weather into something cinematic and unexpected. It's a&nbsp;true testament to the creativity&nbsp;of&nbsp;the entire production team.&nbsp;

Jade Deshayes' lovely video for Moroccan singer-songwriter Meryem Aboulouafa is an impressionistic retelling of an age-old myth that takes the songtitle, Breath Of Roma,&nbsp;as its inspiration.Deshayes' recreates the tale of Romulus and Remus, legendary founders of Rome, as a human drama - two brothers who are closely bonded by the sudden disappearance of their mother (a wolf), are entirely&nbsp;dependent on each other until they are driven apart by the appearance of a mysterious woman, played by Aboulouafa.The director's faithful treatment of the story is intimate, featuring performances from the actors that are bursting with physicality. Aboulouafa, in Arabic dress and&nbsp;entirely in black, makes a striking impression too.&nbsp;And as the story is so timeless and powerful, for an excellent&nbsp;song, this stands up&nbsp;to repeated viewing.

And then, with more brilliantly executed&nbsp;transitions, she gets thrown into her next daytime scene.While DoP Rob Witt's superb photography makes&nbsp;her larger than life,&nbsp;the art direction involved bringing in some distinctly&nbsp;Norwegian features to give Sigrid a taste of her homeland - like jumping through her own-branded taco boxes to escape that marching band. And it culminates in a swirl of tiny vignettes where she&nbsp;actually throws punches and turns into two animated avatars - including a seriously powerful 'anime' Sigrid. And then, arguably, it becomes the making of the movie again.The simple, powerfully visual elements involved here - the movie set, the eyes behind the alien face, the young girl with the chrome-silver gun - end up delivering a sad poignancy that works beautifully with DeLaurentis&#39;s haunting alt-pop.

Artists are directing their own videos with increasing regularity, with mixed results. But when Charlotte Gainsbourg, both serious actress and pop singer, decides to do this, there&#39;s a sense that the outcome might be something special. And so it proves.Creative-directed by Nathalie Canguilhem - who has now joined <a href="http://forever-pictures.com/nathaliecanguillem/" target="_blank">Forever for UK representation</a> &ndash; the La Pac-produced video for Deadly Valentine is the story of a love affair across the&nbsp;generations, told in a dreamstate where reality, fantasy and dance intersect. It starts in childhood, continues through adolescence to adulthood and on&nbsp;into old age.With the couple always in white, the generations start to cross over, and the couple&#39;s bond just gets stronger. What&#39;s interesting that the uplifting nature of the video is counterpointed by the song&nbsp;which not so much romantic as dramatic. It&#39;s also brilliant.&nbsp;Featuring Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange) and Gainsbourg&#39;s daughters, this is unquestionably&nbsp;a great debut. Charlotte Gainsbourg can also direct.

Grizzly Bear may be alternative rock royalty, back with a new record after a very long absence, but Beatrice Pegard&#39;s approach to the plaintive Mourning Sound is counterintuitively irreverent, bordering on wacky.The scenario plays out around an emotional bride played by Clémence Poesy, in a grand French chateaux, surrounded by a chorus of joyful women, and a couple of naked men whose buttocks get regularly slapped. The band have described it as&nbsp;&quot;a playful, pastel-drenched commentary on women&#39;s liberation.&quot; In other words, it&#39;s wacky.
