Calvin Harris 'Merrymaking At My Place' by Kinga Burza
Laura Swinton - July 2007
You are cordially invited to Calvin Harris's grandmother's house for a very special party. There will be beautiful people, tea, cakes, food fights and lots of chintz, not to mention your host, the new king of disco, who'll provide the evening's entertainment.
OK, it's not surprising that the video for a track titled Merrymaking At My Place ended up being a massive party. But that hasn't stopped Kinga Burza having fun with the idea. "I wanted it to feel like there was an element of fantasy," says the director. "What would be his ideal party? Calvin surrounded by lots of hot, beautiful girls."
But then she decided to infuse the Scotsman's dream bash with some quintessential Englishness. Inspired by photographer Martin Parr and his book Think Of England, the video is packed with muted retro details: dusty Diana memorabilia, net curtains, padded headboards and wall-mounted plate collections. The revellers even drink from gran's best china teacups.
In fact, Kinga reveals that her approach was partly driven by the requirements of music TV. "Usually you can't show kids drinking alcohol on MTV," she explains. "So we had to use teacups so you don't actually see what the liquid is. But even though it was initially a censorship thing, that really worked with the whole British grandma thing."
Nonetheless the Granny look of the video had to be carefully crafted. The house in Surrey where they shot belonged to an elderly woman with collections of everything from cardboard boxes to antique furniture and Telly Tubbies. Every room was emptied, then re-filled with props to fit Kinga's desired colour palette.
Kinga was working with her largest crew to date, but in the end the shoot was trouble free, thanks to her insistence of working with a cast that included lots of friends. "This is one of my things," she says. "You can't manufacture that feeling of chaos and enjoyment unless people get on off-camera as well as on-camera."
And she clearly knows how to throw a party. With the actress playing Calvin's gran sharing out bags of Kit Kats among the Shoreditch crowd, the shoot really was all about merrymaking. That feeling comes through on screen, and the use of handheld camera makes it feel like the action is being filmed by one of the guests.
"The whole vibe is about embracing fun," says Kinga, who says that Dorian Dumont of The Teenagers told her that when he watched the video he really wanted to be in it. "I thought "yeah, if it makes people want to be in it, then that's got to be a good thing.""
