How did Saam Farahmand go from nowhere to best director of the year at the CADS in a matter of months? The answer, as David Knight discovers, is that he was an overnight sensation waiting to happen...

Jonathan Hallstrom, member of the one-man Icelandic directing collective TOOL, appears to be losing his grip on reality. Will he descend into mental illness? Will this improve his reel?

When Mark Ronson and Lily Allen decided to work together, the results were always going to be special. The duo's cover of the Kaiser Chiefs' Oh My God is set to be one of the feel-good hits of the summer, and now thanks to Nima Nourizadeh, there's a stonking promo to match.Nourizadeh has worked with Allen twice before, on the videos for LDN and Littlest Things. But this time the set-up is a little

Bat For Lashes' Natasha Khan is a curious creature. She's known for her striking artwork and photography almost as much as her off-kilter pop songs. And Dougal Wilson's video for latest single What's A Girl To Do will surely enhance her mysterious image.Based on a brief written by Khan herself, the video opens with the track's big drum opening in darkness, then the singer appearing cycling down th

From the man who directed the intriguing narrative of Radiohead's Just and the proleptic events of Coldplay's The Scientist comes another story with strange significance – a night in the life of Róisín Murphy, one-time Moloko singer and now solo artist.Jamie Thraves' promo for Murphy's infectious single Overpowered begins with Murphy completing a live performance while wearing an outlandish black

Husband-and-wife directing duo Guillermo Lecuona and Tera Hollingsworth - aka My Happy People - are noted for their commercials and motion design, most notably for the title sequence of 24. But their latest project, Ants In Black Turtlenecks, is a video for Hollingsworth's own music under the name Slyrbe. It's more like an experimental short than a traditional promo, a striking example of the dire

The Stranglers' Peaches is a masterpiece of leery teenage lust, redolent of long, hot summers in grubby Seventies seaside towns. It's why Dan Lowe originally intended to shoot the video for Dub Pistols' updating of the song on Brighton promenade. The total washout that's been this British summer scuppered that idea, but it did mean that Lowe's concept developed into something more complex and ulti

How did animated coloured blocks create something quite so emotional? A fantastic video by the exceedingly clever Stylewar for the compelling, incredible-shrinking Robyn.

Bloke in rabbit hat lies in road, when little red men appear and urge him to run away. Weird and wonderful stuff from Sam Peacocke, a Kiwi director who recently signed to Auckland production company Robber’s Dog Films.

Sophie is back with one of her favourite collaborators and has created a Muller rarity: a controversial video. Shirley Manson appears to be playing a woman of dubious virtue, and this involves some rather surprising, almost Freudian imagery...

Mike Baldwin’s new one, and last one at Red Rabbit before he joined Therapy Films, is set in a classroom during ‘show-and-tell’, and has the same charming narrative development that was a feature of his video for Travis’s Closer.

This video won the Chilli Peppers’ recent video competition, and you can really see why. It features Campervans, girls, guitars, beaches and paint. The young director Omri Cohen tells us he pulled it all together in a couple of days and he’s never directed before. The boy has a future.

After Badly Drawn Boy, OneInThree return with a remake of a video they made earlier that again reveals their keen graphic sense. Apparently the multi-telecine technique is about to be copied by a big ad – but this was first, okay?

Ben was looking for a Seventies sci-fi vibe for his Ali Love video. What he could afford was old school Dr Who, but this still has a great look and zest for a song which sounds like a hit to us.

What a great name for a band this is. And the video is good too. Nice ‘album cover’ idea, from Daniel Eskils, who also recently directed a very cool video for I Robots featuring corrugated cardboard. Kid you not.
