Neon Kelly - July 2007

Ben Taylor has created a tongue-in-cheek homage to the Seventies porn world of Boogie Nights for Dragonette's Take It Like A Man, with frontwoman Martina Sorbara taking on a role that is the female equivalent to Dirk Diggler. The clip shows Sorbara as she films her latest works, with her bandmates appearing as part of the technical crew. Our perspective cuts back and forth between the “real” world and the grainy stock of the porno-in-progress, with the Canadian singer appearing variously as a lustful job interviewer, a TV repairwoman and, finally, a randy doctor, replete with a suggestive squirting syringe.

Suggestive is the key word here. While the video certainly hints at rampant sex, everything is left to the viewer's imagination, and a generous helping of humour keeps proceedings (just) within the boundaries of good taste.

Dragonette themselves played a large part in getting the concept approved, but not everybody was so supportive of the idea. While Taylor and his crew were attempting to cast the piece, they received some less-than-friendly replies from local talent agencies. “We got some really heated responses – they really missed the gag,” says Taylor. “The main issue I had was that a lot of these agencies supply girls for the kind of dance videos where you're constantly looking up girl's skirts. The irony was that, despite the fact we were dealing with the porn set, we were never going to be as exploitative as that.”

Aware of the potential pitfalls of what they were doing, Taylor and his team undertook every effort to ensure the one-day shoot was enjoyable. All male crew members were required to grow facial hair prior to the event, while stylist Johnny Blue Eyes – whose costumes were an essential ingredient of the video – only agreed to take part if Taylor himself dressed as a Seventies porno director, complete with four-inch Cuban heels.

This sense of fun has rubbed off. While the visuals certainly look the part - due to the use of aged 16mm stock - there's no doubt the video's intentions are coming from a good place.

“It was always going to be funny before it was sexy.” concludes Taylor. “The gag is that it's the guys that are in the pants, the ones that look like goons, whereas the women are all in control. I'm not saying it's a work of art, but it could have been very tacky and I think we avoided that.”
