Jake Bugg 'What Doesn't Kill You' by Andrew Douglas

Sam Hill - 25th Sept 2013

This simple and striking shoot heralds the return of Mercury-nominated teen Jake Bugg with What Doesn't Kill YOu - the first single from his second album – and at the helm is the director of 2005's remake of The Amityville Horror (and many music videos besides) Andrew Douglas.

Andrew has filmed a solo performance of Jake, then distressed the footage so it would feel at home alongside his 60's and 70's influences.  Filmed in lovely soft black and white, it also contains an interesting prologue spoken by Jake in the not too distant past.

Andrew Douglas: "This song yelled rock n roll in all its raw simplicity. It seemed to connect to an earlier period of music, like the Velvets or The Stooges, and we tried to reflect that raw direct feel in the simplicity of the shoot.

"One camera, four takes, and a simple but intense performance from Jake. We then processed the HD footage back through Flame to get a film look that is very 16mm with the artifacts of an older documentary piece. And the idea of that was to connect Jake to the rootsy, unaffected feel of Cash or Dylan."
