Elli Ingram 'When It Was Dark' by Emil Nava
David Knight - 5th Feb 2014
Emil Nava's video for Elli Ingram's Mad Love was nominated at the MVAs last year, and now they get together again, this time in church, for When It Was Dark.
And once again Ellie displays a distinctive smouldering charisma to go with her fabulous soulful voice – and good sexual chemistry with a finely cheekboned and heavily-tattooed man of the cloth.
But just as distinctive is the superbly cinematic look of the video courtesy of DoP Patrick Meller's excellent cinematography. Filmed inside a Georgian church in Maida Vale in West London, Patrick shot this on 35mm anamorphic on an Arri 435. The result is a brilliant richness of image that arguably digital still cannot achieve.
And Patrick tells us: "I wish I could shoot on 35mm on every job."
