M.I.A. 'Double Bubble Trouble' by M.I.A.
David Knight - 20th May 2014
M.I.A. takes the reins to direct her own video for Double Bubble Trouble, and makes something totally distinctive - and very M.I.A. Â
This is M.I.A.'s version of a dystopian near-future in which youth control their technology, and run the world - wielding guns made on 3D-printers, and peace drones floating on their housing estates. Shot on multiple formats ranging from 4K to 16mm to iPhone, reflecting the multiple platforms of communication in the tech age, it's a riot of imagery, ideas, visual wit, with a trademark whiff of danger.
With guest appearances from her track collaborators The Party Squad - together with squadrons of London kids - its an extravaganza of style and tech - and London attitude – supervised by producers Juliette Larthe and Margo Mars at Prettybird. But it's that overpowering bombardment of imagery which makes this so cool, and so characteristic of the artist. M.I.A. has knocked it out of the park.
