Chvrches 'Under The Tide' by Sing J Lee

Jimmy Brown - 27th Oct 2014

For Chvrches' synth-pulsing electro boomer Under The Tide, Sing J Lee makes it all about the visuals and delivers an orgy of retro anime and a moody band performance - enhanced by some very cool lighting FX supplied by Drop City.

SING J LEE:

"Under the Tide is one of the highlights in a Chvrches live set. Doc's energy is infectious, his dancing has become a set piece of the show and it's certainly a crowd pleaser. That energy is what drives the idea for the video, this being the final video off what has been an incredible debut album campaign for them - I wanted to give it a huge send-off.

"This, in a way, is the third part in a loose trilogy of videos for the album - The Mother We Share, Lies and Under the Tide all link thematically and visually, in particular one ends on the shot where the other one starts.

"Lauren, Doc and Iain all love 80s visuals, memes, graphic novels - in fact, some of their tour posters were designed by a Marvel illustrator, and so I thought it would be great to incorporate all of this, push the visuals as much as we could and create an anime sci-fi hybrid.  I brought in good friends from my old university course to help with the work, Jason Edmunds illustrated and Dan and Nick provided some incredible vfx and graphic assets…eight weeks of creating a makeshift studio and renderfarm in my flat".
