Charlie Winston 'The Weekend' by Ian Roderick Gray

Lassamie Prasimay - 15th June 2018

Ian Roderick Gray helms an action-packed tribute to classic movie dance routines for Charlie Winston's The Weekend, orchestrating a continuous shot through different set-ups on a film set with clever sleight-of-hand.

Most impressive is how some characters appear to change before your eyes, as Gray's constantly moving camera travels through time as well as space, and always staying true to the concept.

IAN RODERICK GRAY:

"When we were conceiving the idea for video to The Weekend, we had two primary objectives. Firstly we wanted it to be an exercise in style and the intention was to somehow thread multiple genres together into one cohesive and action-packed film.

"The second objective was to explore more complex themes about identity and specifically how people have a tendency to use the weekend as an opportunity to shed their skin, break free from the shackles of their everyday lives, and temporarily liberate themselves to becomes the person they really want to be. We demonstrated this in the most literal representation possible, by actually showing our characters rip off their skin to become someone entirely different.

"Since the film industry is the most focused example of this act of becoming another person and adopting a different persona, it seemed to be the perfect fit thematically, and especially the pure escapism offered by classical Hollywood musicals.

"Finally, since life moves at a relentless pace, and we are constantly evolving, it seemed fitting to reflect this through capturing the entire video in one extended, continuous single shot."
