Lola Young 'Blind Love' by The Rest
Rob Ulitski - 6th Dec 2019
A failed relationship is studied in reverse in The Rest's emotional video for Lola Young's Blind Love.
Hauntingly sombre, the visual opens with a car being crushed at a yard, with Young looking on through teary eyes. Each scene is then presented as a reverse narrative, exploring bittersweet memories of love and loss that reflect the track's heartbreaking lyrics.
Utilising lingering camera movements and minimalist art direction to keep the focus on the unravelling story, Young's emotional yet understated performance is the heart of the concept. Intimate and personal, the repetitive use of the car as a location creates an emotional anchor to the project, representing all of Young's unfinished business with the relationship, and ultimately her need to let go and move on.
ALEX from THE REST:
It was important to me for Lola’s performance to not be too melodramatic or over the top.
"Blind Love is this bittersweet reflective song about a failed relationship and the video is very much inspired by that, but I wanted it to end on a hopeful note.
"So I took a reverse narrative approach and started the video with the sadder dramatic moments like the crushing of the car and the apparent distance between them figuratively and physically, to then have things get warmer and more intimate as the music swells up towards the end.
"It was important to me for Lola’s performance to not be too melodramatic or over the top. She got into it and was very impressed. The parts where she needed to act seemed to come naturally to her, the shot of her crying at the top of the video was a perfect first take!"
