H. Kink 'Hit The Road' by Lisa Rieffel

Rob Ulitski - 17th Feb 2020

Lisa Rieffel directs a nostalgic visual for her band H. Kink, inspired by the TV variety shows of the late '60s and early '70s.

For the band's twangy and deceptively sweet-sounding Hit The Road - which celebrates the relief and freedom of walking out of a relationship that had you feeling trapped - H. Kink channel brother-sister act The Carpenters' numerous TV appearances at that time: light, colourful and wholesome, with perhaps something darker lurking underneath.

As charming as it is nostalgic, the odd moments of high-fives and nods to the camera are a cheesy homage to the genre, and work perfectly within the concept. Taking on the roles of DoP and editor, Thaddeus Bridwell captures a variety of simple shots and movement and utilises crossfades and jump cuts to help keep things within the TV aesthetic of the period.
