Robinson 'Watching You' by Balan Evans
Rob Ulitski - 3rd Mar 2020
Robinson yearns for something more in Balan Evans's poignant video for Watching You.Â
Focusing on the artist's unrequited love for one of her close friends, the visual features a montage of different clips from an adventure through the woods and country, intercut with a performance shot on 16mm.
For the narrative we step right into the shoes of Robinson, the footage captured as if it was the artist herself filming, building an intimate and personal perspective. The use of 8mm and 16mm film stock creates a wistful and nostalgic aesthetic, perfectly complementing the emotionally affecting track and lyrics.Â
The performances are strong throughout, with Robinson's heartbreaking solo setups stealing the show and anchoring the melancholic concept.Â
BALAN EVANS:Â
"I used to make little 8mm films of holidays and weddings and I loved how you can really feel the perspective of the filmmaker in the footage, it has the home video feel to it, I guess because it was the first home video.
"It felt like a great way to tell the perspective of Robinson in this song, especially as the lyrics have this internal perspective. I wanted to emulate the feeling of those 8mm films I used to make but layer a narrative through it, using this self-shooting POV perspective to tell the story.
"I chose 16mm for the performance to help separate it into its own world. We had all the weather that day, which actually was great because it mirrored the emotions of the song."
