Joya Mooi 'Bitter Parts' by Michael Middelkoop
Rob Ulitski - 15th July 2020
Joya Mooi faces up to imperfections in Michael Middelkoop's video for Bitter Parts.
Shot entirely within a hexagonal mirrored room, the visual features the artist in the centre of an 'all-seeing eye', where her reflections intertwine and interact. A hint of subtle VFX hides the transitions between different costumes -with a focus on bold, vivid colours- resulting in a kaleidoscope of vibrant imagery.
Speaking on the release, artist Joya explains: “Bitter Parts is about coming to terms with the less pleasant parts of yourself. The song plays with denial of this, at times I ignore the ‘mirror’ or I suggest means to reduce the confrontation with myself. I think I’ve accepted that I’m not always going to be the perfect self for myself, but I think I can now take a closer look at the imperfections.”
The accompanied music video is made by director Michael Middelkoop, who explains: “I wanted to explore the song’s themes by creating this infinite, unavoidable reflection of Joya. An all-seeing eye in an all-seeing room, that puts all beautiful and bitter parts on full display."
