Travis 'Valentine' by Fran Healy
Promonews - 21st July 2020
Following the release of the mostly animated video for A Ghost, Travis frontman Fran Healy returns to the director’s chair for Valentine, the newly released track from the band's next album 10 Songs.
After the lockdown conditions inspired Healy to take a route which involved rotoscoping footage of himself, accompanied by friendly ghosts for A Ghost, here he's all live action, but very much grounded, in this early post-lockdown effort.
Healy is lying on the floor, surrounded by a lighting rig that effectively choreographs the song. It's simple, striking and effective - with Travis's frontman calling upon big name help for its creation: the video was shot by eminent DoP Newton Thomas Segal (Drive, Bohemian Rhapsody), with lighting design by Queens Of The Stone Age’s lighting technician, Gigi Pedron.
Shot in Aspect Lighting’s car park in LA, the video again includes a mysterious trio of musicians to replace Healy's actual bandmates.
"The idea came from the lyric - 'If I lie here, I might die here, I may lay here for a while'," says Healy. "I saw me lying on the ground for the duration using our drone to look down on me and maybe have stuff happen while I lay there.
“It expanded from here to have lights and a second camera. Again, Covid-19 made this a tricky shoot and not being able to shoot with the band meant getting stunt doubles in who I've dressed as ghosts and now in this, they look like urban guerrillas with their balaclavas, shades and black clothes!”
This tougher image for the band, accompanying Fran in his strong new all-red boilersuit and cap look, reflects the more muscular sound by Travis on Valentine. “It was recorded as a predominately live performance in December 2019 at Rak studios in London," he says. "It’s the closest Travis have gotten sonically to our debut album, Good Feeling. Alex Harvey-esque.”
