Miya Miya 'Cold Blood' by Bailey Tom Bailey

Rob Ulitski - 17th Aug 2020

Bailey Tom Bailey explores isolation and human testing in his sci-fi inspired visual for Miya Miya.

Opening in a nondescript testing facility, vocalists Gini and Jordan are sealed within perspex containers, under watch by an unknown captor. After being liberated from captivity, they meet a worse fate on their escape.

Striking and well executed, the location anchors the haunting aesthetic, a clandestine and clinical space in which unimaginable horrors await an unlucky few. The video mixes body horror and sci-fi with a vein of dark humour.

MIYA MIYA:

We were insanely lucky to find perspex boxes at our location, a former research lab.

"Initially, the idea was to evoke feelings of captivity during lockdown, but the concept evolved to represent something more significant. I wanted to explore the idea that we all feel put in a box, struggling within a system, yet we rely on those structures for survival.

"Produced during lockdown, this low budget project was a struggle. Slow wardrobe and art department deliveries delayed the shoot and the biggest panic came when we realised all the perspex in the world was now in front of a till somewhere. We were insanely lucky to find perspex boxes (originally used to redirect fumes) already available at our location, a former research lab.

"The result made Bailey and designer Nico Sadori's (who was on a break from DC's Pennyworth) concept even more unique. We were blessed with location and crew availability due to larger productions being on hold."
