Schafter ft Houston X 'Need Help' by Kalina Pulit

Rob Ulitski - 14th Oct 2020

Kalina Pulit explores surveillance and observation in her promo for teenage Polish rapper Schafter, featuring London rapper Houston X.

The video for Need Help was shot in both Warsaw and in London, and is a frenetic journey through lo-fi aesthetics and fly-on-the-wall perspectives, featuring numerous TV screens in a nod to pioneering video artist Nam June Paik.

The performances are suitably offbeat and energetic, celebrating the dynamism of the concept.

KALINA PULIT:

The video features 25 TV screens, 12 CCTV cameras and 270 metres of cable.

"The video was inspired by the idea of trying to get away from something but being unable to, and perhaps enjoying the thrill of it along the way.

"Key visual influences include the work of a video art pioneer, Nam June Paik, footage of Kate Moss under surveillance, as well as a set of music videos exploring the concept of someone being observed, both knowingly and unknowingly.

"Born out of constraint of needing to capture two artists in two different countries in the midst of self-isolation, the CCTV theme provided a point of connection between two narratives.

"Shot on 16mm, in London and Warsaw, the video features 25 TV screens, 12 CCTV cameras and 270 metres of cables."
