ELI 'Revelation' by Jade O'Connor
Rob Ulitski - 3rd Sept 2021
Jade O'Connor is back with her second promo for up-and-coming artist ELI.
Oozing with gritty reversed guitar riffs, punchy bass melodies and grounding breakbeats, the track taps into the darker facets of ELI’s sound, showcasing her versatility. The video reflects that mood by placing the artist in a clandestine industrial location, performing as the camera captures her from a series of unusual angles.
"I’m excited for everyone to see an edgier side to me and to see my evolution and growth as an artist,” ELI has explained. "I’ve been inspired by so many women, and more so by superheroes - Catwoman was my main influence when it came to conceptualising the visuals."
DoP James Huthwaite's use of slick tracking shots and surreal high angle setups lends a dreamy, otherworldly feel to the project, which is anchored by ELI's grounded performance and O'Connor's intelligent direction.
JADE O'CONNOR:
I pulled references from films films such as Catwoman, Blade and The Matrix.
"Unlike Lover - ELI’s first music video - this one showcases her edgier, and more sensual side. I pulled references from films films such as Catwoman, Blade and The Matrix. I loved the dark, contrasty lighting style from these movies mixed with the black leather styling, and thought that Revelation would fit this style really well.
"We used a variety of mediums when shooting this music video. You'll see some shots created using a 360 camera and fisheye lens that I wanted to implement to give the video a 90's/2000's feel, as well as having variety to keep the audience invested. Similarly to the pulsating track, during post production we decided to add an effect to make the lights pulse to push the Blade/Matrix visuals further.
"It is always a pleasure working alongside ELI to create scenes that showcase female empowerment and has become one of the main themes within our music videos. I am so happy to have made this alongside some of my best friends, and I’m very grateful yet again to ELI for approaching me to direct this music video."
